Muhammad Sadiq said he had bought furniture worth Rs250,000 as part of his daughter’s dowry a few months ago from Muhammad Irfan, proprietor of Irfan Furniture at Islampura. He said Irfan had assured him that he would use the best quality wood and would take complete responsibility if the furniture developed problems.
He said it had only been two months into his daughter’s marriage and the furniture had started fading and had cracked in several places.
He said he had complained to Irfan about the furniture but he delayed the matter and then refused to replace it or return the money.
Sadiq asked the court to direct the respondent to return the money he had spent on the furniture and Rs50,000 as damages.
Irfan told The Express Tribune that he had not sold Sadiq defective furniture, and had asked him to bring the furniture to his shop if he wanted it repaired, but he didn’t, he said. He said, “Sadiq wanted my employees to go check the furniture at his daughter’s house but I told him that we would charge extra for that. He refused to pay the charges.” This is why his grievances were not addressed, he said.
