As he reiterated his commitment to building a peaceful neighbourhood in South Asia, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told world leaders on Friday that the Kashmir issue cannot be sidelined until it was resolved in line with the wishes of the region’s people.
“We cannot draw a veil over the issue of Kashmir, until it is addressed in accordance with the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said in his speech at the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Premier Nawaz said many opportunities for prosperity in South Asia had been missed, because of unresolved conflicts in the region. “We have a choice today [to either] continue with the status quo or to seize the moment to resolve all outstanding issues and free up our shared energies for cooperation,” he added.
“To take this course of high statesmanship, we need more, not less, dialogue and diplomacy,” the prime minister said. “We need to respect each other’s rights and sensibilities. We must have relationships based on equality, mutual respect and transparency.”
Nawaz said Pakistan was disappointed at the cancellation of foreign secretary-level talks with India, adding that this was ‘another missed opportunity’. “Pakistan is convinced that we must remain engaged in the dialogue process for settling disputes and building economic and trade relations. Let us not ignore the dividends of peace,” he said.
The premier said Pakistan’s “support and advocacy of the right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is a historic commitment and duty, as a party in the Kashmir dispute.” Stressing that the issue must be resolved for the betterment of the region, he said “Pakistan is ready to work for the resolution of this problem through negotiations.”
On the other hand, Prime Minister Nawaz congratulated the people of Afghanistan over the successful completion of elections and offered ‘warm felicitations and good wishes’ to the country’s new Afghan leadership.
“As always, Pakistan stands in solidarity with the fraternal Afghan people,” he said, expressing hope that the landmark developments would lead to the emergence of a stronger, more stable, and unified Afghanistan. “We also hope that the process of inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation would move forward,” he added.
The premier said Pakistan was committed to forging a deeper bilateral relationship with Afghanistan and called for greater cooperation and understanding between the two nations.
“Afghanistan should become a pivot of strategic cooperation, rather than of rivalry. In the past year and a half, we have consciously reached out to Afghanistan to address difficult issues and build on convergences. We have made headway in this effort,” he told the UN assembly.
Directing the world leaders’ attention towards the massive military operation to eliminate terrorism in Pakistan’s tribal areas, Nawaz said complementary counter-terrorism measures by Kabul on its side of the border are essential to achieving optimal results.
Premier Nawaz condemned the indiscriminate killings of civilians in Gaza and conveyed Pakistan’s sympathies for the continued plight of Palestinians. “We welcome the ceasefire between Palestine and Israel, but the next steps must be taken,” he said.
“The blockade of Gaza must be lifted, Palestinian prisoners freed and illegal settlements halted. The United Nations should facilitate a just and lasting solution of the Palestinian issue.”
He also called on all parties in Syria to renounce violence and hold dialogue to restore peace in their land.
The prime minister said the emergence of new militant entities in the Middle East illustrated that terrorism remains a global threat. The Islamic State militant movement in Iraq and Syria did not have the sanction of any religion and must be countered with unified and resolute will, he said.
“We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We are fighting terrorism planted on Pakistan’s soil. Our valiant soldiers are laying down their lives to take out terrorists and their networks,” he added.
Nawaz said it is important to counter the narrative of extremists. “Inter-racial tensions and defamation of religions provide fertile ground for conflict. Constructive and serious dialogue among religions is essential to promote understanding, tolerance and harmony,” he told the General Assembly.
“We remain committed to the UN-led efforts to support these objectives.”
The prime minister also spoke on nuclear weapons issue, saying Pakistan will continue to support the objectives of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and pursue a policy of nuclear restraint and credible minimum deterrence.
“Pakistan is not participating in any arms race in the region. Yet we cannot be oblivious to the emerging security scenarios and buildup of armaments. We too, have the obligation to maintain a robust and reliable deterrence.”
Premier Nawaz reiterated the need for an inter-linked mechanism for pursuing nuclear restraint, conventional equilibrium and conflict resolution. He said Pakistan ought to be a part of these export control regimes, especially the Nuclear Suppliers Group. “Pakistan also qualifies for full access to civil nuclear technology, to overcome its energy shortages and spur economic growth,” he added.
The prime minister also said that the ongoing UN reform must be comprehensive. “We support a reform of the Security Council that would reflect the interests of all member states and not the ambitions of a few,” he said.
“There should be no new permanent seats in the Council. This will be contrary to the democratic character of this world body. We want the Council to become more representative, equitable, accountable and transparent,” he added.

Pakistan of 1947 doesn't exist. So what is Pakistan's locus standi on the Kashmir issue? Just because you chose to keep the name Pakistan for the remnant territory in the west, doesn't make it the same. Bangladesh too should make claims on AJK.
Since you love the Kashmiris, why don't you announce that you will provide asylum to all those Kashmiris who want to be part of Pakistan to apply for a visa. Let us see if you can muster a majority of the 'Muslims of Kashmir'. Talk is cheap. Put money where your mouth is.
@Balanced: gets you nowhere. Just watch Mois MSG speech and the Americans who were on stage to fete him and you will know why.
@Blithe if all other statesmen went missing.
@Jag Nathan: we know India will not give it , but we will take it from you, sunny.
@ajeet: Baluchistan and Sindh too deserve freedom from Punjabi imperialism. You should be careful about making comments, Pakistanis will come to know what we really want.. you are ruining all our propaganda war in Balochistan and Sindh, you should learn from our forefathers who separated East Pakistan in a classic way...wake up
@Faisal: " This speech was read directly from paper in a very boring fashion." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Thats why I have long proposed that Veena Malik should be appointed the Paki Ambassador to the UN...
Thank you Nawaz Sharif for your love and brotherhood shown to the Kashmiri people. We always love and appreciate Pakistan's voice at the UN always in support of Kashmiri rights. The future is bright, and Kashmir and Pakistan are two parts of the same great nation. Hoping for unity for Kashmir with Pakistan. Help rid us of the yoke of Indian domination, oppression, occupation, and injustice. Free Kashmir.
@Mk: Yes indeed. He was given a thunderous applause at entry and the Assembly was full.
@Isra:
The forefathers of the present day Kashmirs had peacefully chosen to remain as an integral part of India like any other province of India. Now, their grand children, who are the present day Kashmirs, have no fundamental right to create a country of their own like any other Indian citizen is not given any fundamental right to create their own country within India. The adult franchise of Kashmir in 1947 are no more in the present world. Hence. it is a dead issue to discuss plebiscite in Kashmir in 2014 or hereafter.
Anyways, did anyone notice the empty seats In UN hall when nawaz sharif was speaking. It was filled to I guess less than 10 percent of its capacity. Eagerly waiting to see the thunderous response which modi Ji will get when he steps on the podium. This will perhaps symbolically explain the realities of modern day.
Phew, smells like indians in here!
This issue of tribune seems to be the Indian version published from Delhi. This can't be from Pakistan.I am not sure my comment will be posted since its an Indian paper.
Well, Nawaz Sharif had to rake up the Kashmir issue vociferously for domestic consumption and safety of his govt back home. But unfortunately for Pakistan, the Modi wave is going on strongly throughout America as US wants to sign big business deals as well as strike strategic defence partnership to counter China's influence in the region which would drown the Pak tantrums on Kashmir issue into oblivion. Moreover, US and India are both wary of Pakistan hobnobbing with the terrorists organisations leaves little room for Pakistan to make any headway.
@ModiFied: It would be better if you read it first. Then you would see that the resolutions require Bharat to withdraw its forces as well leaving only police for security, which Bharat has never done because it knows the Kashmiris will choose Pakistan over Bharat any day. That is why Bharat uses force to remain in Occupied Kashmir.
Mr PM do u expect us Indian to take u seriously when even your country don't take u seriously , stop cracking old and too often repeated jokes
Dear Indians Mind your own Business, advising to give freedom to Sindh and Blu.. will lead end almost 13 more free states on your side. :D Promoting hatred b/w Pakistanis is your old job not surprised at all. Pakistan is facing tough time for last decades but till when. in this world nothing is constant. May be our Today yours Tomorrow. again not interested to talk you to you guys even. stay focused on your papers not ours.
A Pakistani from Province of Sindh.
Don't worry the this Nawaz Sharif's statement is just a verbal claim and Nawaz Sharif can't do any thing to free Jammu and Kashmir from Indian occupation except giving such like these types of verbal speeches regarding Jammu and Kashmir,Jammu and Kashmir's freedom because Nawaz Sharif is that coward man who met that times' US' president Bill Clinton and withdrew forces and Mujahideen from Kargil when Musharraf deployed troops and Mujahideen occupied Kargil the only way to Jammu and Kashmir from India. Please never take this Nawaz Sharif's speech at UNGA seriously and most importantly UNO has discharged Kashmir's issue from its agenda and after discharging Kashmir's issue can't be resolved thru UNO's resolutions because UNO protects and respects only non-muslim states' interests and benefits......
I pity PM Nawaz Sharif for having to read from a script drafted elsewhere and bullied into reading. A very weak man on very shaky grounds having to dance to the Orchestra and a Conductor holding a Gun rather than a magic wand. How many were there to listen to the speech I wonder, same speech year after year must be very monotonous.
@SAL india has not undergone a single partition since independence but i dont need to remind you of bangladesh.so you pakistanis should be worried because balochistan is not looking happy. who knows?history might repeat itself for those unwilling to learn!
@BW Singh: If you are a "Singh" from India, and have been witness to atrocities in any part of it, what prevents you taking that to court in a PIL, or to journalists who can print your evidence, or to the public at large? Wait! Could it be that you are a "Singh" from a country that is lawless, and where the press is too busy sucking up to authority, and the people are totally inert? Good luck, friend, whoever you are. You are one liability even Pakistan should not want!
@ BW singh
Nice try.
@Jag Nathan: Hold your horses....Where in his speech did the Prime Minister ask India to GIVE Kashmir to Pakistan ?....I think he said the issue must be resolved taking the aspirations of the people of the region.... rings alarm bells in indian spheres doesn't it ?...... goes to show my indian friends too know the reality of what would happen if Kashmir gets to decide its future
Such a nice speech. Unfortunately, what you say ,is not what you do.
@Isra: India can set your fragmented country on fire by igniting minority insurrections, and then demanding a referendum. Pakistan has been trying every which way to do that in J&K for six decades and has only succeeded in ruining its own self. Which Kashmiri in his/her right mind would heed a referendum call from a country which cannot conduct an honest election for itself? Now I can go on forever on this topic, but then I would risk looking as "absurd" as you. In this case, friend, Might just also happens to be Right - luckily for Kashmiris!
@Owais: " Useless village idiot" ++++++++++++++++++++++ But doesnt Dehati Aurat suit NS better?
Good for you Mr. Sharif, but let me remind you Even your so called brotherly Muslim Ummah Countries do not support you on this Topic, You have few more years to rant Kashmir Kashmir. But who will listen to you? I am not against the referendum but please first take a plebiscite in Baluchistan, Karachi & defeat Indian on moral ground and i will be the first reader who will support and comment on that particular issue.
Regards; A proud Indian Muslim
Two suggestions for the honorable PM:
1) Read the UN resolution. When you do, you will find out the first step is Pakistan army soud be pulled out of so calle AJK. Secondly he needs to restore demographic balance in so called AJK and GB to what it was in 1948. Third since plebiscite needs to be conducted in entire J&K, he needs to get back the part which was handed over to China.
2) ensure that Pakistan conducts at least one free and fair election in Pakistan where people's mandate is honored. It is amazing that he talks aout wish of Kashmiri people who have all along been voting in free and fair elections and forgets that wish of Paksitani people has never been honored.
Mr. PM, if you are so concerned about Kashmir, why don't you first and voluntarily start plebiscite in Pakistan held Kashmir ?
so this magical speech somehow delivers them the kashmir, good luck with that
@ajeet: Why are you so worried about our country, think about Bihar, Assam, South India, IOK, Punjab who want freedom from India.
I was at the UN protest with 7k - 10k people to say Go Nawaz Go. Useless village idiot
The old absurd Indian rhetoric over the Kashmir issue does not amazes me any more. However I am impressed by their foreign office task force that is assigned to give a rapid response over the issue of Kashmir. Without going into answering those absurd comments, can anyone explain to me why other countries let the process of referendum take place where people decide their fate to either stay or breakaway? Not long ago,why East Timor got independence from Indonesia ? South Sudan became an independent counter ? Provence of Quebec gets to choose if they want to stay or break away from Canada? Most recently Scots went to polls to decide if they want to remain part of Britain or an independent country. You Indians only believe in "Might is right" philosophy, otherwise their would not be any reason to subjugate Kashmiris under the Military presence of over 600,000 personnels. If Indian are sincere in peace in the region, then Kashmiris should be given their legitimate right to choose and decide their own future.
I think Pakistan will be sidelined completely ... Does the pm think world is hearing to him after all those exports of terrorism to the world and now giving lecture of elimination !! BDW Kashmir is India. Period.
This speech was read directly from paper in a very boring fashion. He came all the way from Pakistan spending $800,000 USD to read out what was written on paper for him?
This man may still be fairly popular to some who have fallen for Metro's and his ad campaigns but let's be realistic, this man does not have what it takes to get Pakistan from the hole it's buried in. Pakistan needs a drastic change, not the meager 3% increase.
Kashmiris are suffering because of India and Pakistan and obviously after wasting almost seven decades one has to realise that the matter cannot be solved through dialogue. UN must take in account that India nor Pakistan is doing what is in the best interest of Kashmiri people. India wants to grab the land and cut Pakistan off from China and Pakistan wants to secure water supply through Kashmir.
Enough killing, rapes and other crimes by Indian Army and enough socalled freedom fighters from Pakistan. Kashmir doesn't need any of this.
Make her independant under a temporary UN mandate and grant her something like a marshal plan to develop her economy.
I am an Indian and I have seen what our Army and leader are doing there. It makes me sick, really sick. Sorry Kashmir, this is not what Gandhi Ji wanted.
When you talk about the Jammu and Kashmir Issue, which tugs at the heart strings of both nations, you need to just be clear of what you are talking about. I am not getting into the murky issues of accession - but one needs to understand what the Indian side of J & K, which has been a bone of contention for so long actually is.
For so long, People have treated it as a monolith i.e. a state with a total Muslim population - it is not so.
Our side of Kashmir is not comprised of a total Muslim population, unlike the Indian side - it has a mix of different populations.
Let me start by Jammu, which is also an area of pilgrimage. It has a huge Hindu population in addition to its Muslim one - 2/3rd of Jammu or 1/6th of the J & K state are Hindus.
Let's move on to Kashmir - This area is unlike is pitched as not totally populated by Muslims. It is actually the land of Kashmiri Pundits who have been living in exile from the valley, but have not and will not give up their claim of the land. Their populations have increased and not decreased in exile, making them a commendable force.
But Kashmir does not belong only to the Pandits and the Muslims.
In fact, the area of Ladakh comprises of a Buddhist and a Muslim population.
Also, In addition to the Indian and Pakistani claims on the land, China now claims the Aksai Chin area of the land.
Let's put all that into perspective and go to the UN plebiscite claim. It is untenable right now in my perspective. Kashmir needs to be thought of in a new way altogether. We have to ensure that every voice is heard of.
But, the solution that Nawaz speaks does not and will not, lead to any resolution in the current climate, which shows that rather than being a statesman, he is a pawn reading pre-scripted notions.
We have both lost so many lives on both sides, yet no side has a smart solution to the problem, which at least pertains to common sense, if nothing at all.
Also, even if we were to take just the Indian Kashmiri Muslim population as a whole and ask them if they wanted to go to Pakistan, the consensus will be no. They would either vote to go to India or be a separate, which is a claim that I understand, since they have suffered the most between the two warring factions.
The Kashmir issue can only be resolved, if both sides need to stop idioticizing and politicizing the issue. Anyways, regardless of common sense, let's continue for another 100 years. India's not giving up anytime soon.
True meaning of NS to UNGA - We once again assure this august house to eat grass for thousand years.
Pakistan's reputation of saying one thing and doing another will make it difficult for anyone to take Sharif speech seriously - you just don't have the credibility to take the World Stage even for a short speech.
Yes, there should be a plebiscite. That is what TuQ and IK are demanding. The issue cannot be sidelined until it was resolved in line with the wishes of the people. We have a choice today to either continue with the status quo or to seize the moment to resolve all outstanding issues. So, Mr. Sharif, when will you be resigning? Go Nawaz Go.
Oh, I forgot to mention that we are talking of the territory called Pakistan and not Kashmir.
" Speech at General Assembly: Kashmir cannot be sidelined, says PM" ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ But the PM has been sidelined.......
“There should be no new permanent seats in the Council." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Not even if one is offered to the eminent Leader of the Muslim world eg Pakistan?
" The United Nations should facilitate a just and lasting solution of the Palestinian issue.” ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Boiler Plate lines.
Nawaz Sheriif can hardly hold his nation together and he aspires to take Kashmir from India. Its a ticket to no where. India will not give Kashmir away in a million years. The US knows it, the Chinese know it, the UN knows it and Nawaz knows it. Just that he likes to fool his fellow Pakistanis as he nothing much more to offer.
" “We have a choice today [to either] continue with the status quo or to seize the moment to resolve all outstanding issues and free up our shared energies for cooperation,” he added." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Illogical statement. Status Quo is the very best outcome for Pakistan.Period.
" Premier Nawaz said many opportunities for prosperity in South Asia had been missed, because of unresolved conflicts in the region." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ He was of course referring to the Azadi & Inqilab Dharnas .......
His entire speech is of defensive nature... Why was he so scared?
Mr Sharif cracked few old Pakistani jokes made other premiers laugh and the end ask for aid..
Mr.Sharif there is nothing to talk about. Kashmir has been an integral part of us for over 5000 years.
A balanced speech, covering all important aspects of foreign, regional, and domestic concerns.
No country will tolerate foreign dignitaries from talking to seperatists.
China can't even tolerate Obama visiting the Dalai Lama. How can India tolerate Pakistan meeting former Terrorists and Islamists? (I thought Pakistan was fighting Islamists, but its fine to support them in India?)
How can Pakistan claim to speak for entire Kashmiris, when it refuses to talk to Democratic forces, but will talk to Hurriat, who have never actually proved their support in any Election?
Can anyone name one Hindu or one Buddhist in the Hurriat?
J&K has Hindu majority Jammu and Buddhist majority Ladakh. Hurriat represents everything that is bad in Pakistan today. It is an Islamist movement, the kind of which is haunting Pakistan for the past decade.
The Prime Minister Sharif in his speech at the UNGA has said the Kashmir cannot be sidelined, sidelining the Shimla Agreement and the Lahore Agreement. It will make any composite dialogue with India either delayed or never happening. He is not candidly looking for better relation with India. Mr. Sharif should know that Pakistan has not acted according to the UNGA resolution, not vacating the Azad Kashmir. The realistic solution is accepting the current LOC as the international boundary. He cannot selectively ask for self rule for Kashmir while denying it in Baluchistan, Sindh and KP. The Kashmir dispute was made in the West, particularly by Lord Mountbatten and by the British diplomatic services. This is written by H.V. Hudson's book: the Great Divide. This is given in detail in my book: America, Pakistan, and the India Factor, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013
Go Nawaz Go....! Nice speech by the PM. Pakistanis need to have peace with India and the only thing stopping that is Kashmir.
Thats the problem isn't it.
After losing 4 wars, Billions of Rupees, half a country, massive Radicalization of society to send proxies to fight in Kashmir, countless deaths due to this Radicalzation, if Pakistan cannot forget or sideline the Kashmir issue(which is essentially an Islamist issue since no Hindu, Buddhist or Sikh in Kashmir will support Seperatism), then it speaks a lot for a country's priorities.
India has sent a probe to Mars! Its Economy is 10 times as big, even though population is 7 times as big.
Most importantly India is peaceful. Pakistan is NOT.
Pakistan has to decide if it wants peace. This peace process nomenclature implies both sides need peace, but that's not the case, is it?
""There should be no new permanent seats in the Council. This will be contrary to the democratic character of this world body.We want the Council to become more representative,""
Mr Prime Minister, I cant understand your logic. On one hand you are saying the security council should be more democratic and representative and in the same sentence you are saying that a country of 1.25 billion people representing 16% of humanity should not be given representation.
Could you please explain this contradiction in the same sentence.
UN should issue a copy of the resolutions to Mr Sharif and ask him to read it. Take first step, vacate the so called AJK and GB and go to the UN again with same speech. Your words will carry more weight.
Baluchistan and Sindh too deserve freedom from Punjabi imperialism.
Rote, mechanical and complete waste of time and gobs of money that could have been used for some good cause. The man is a loser par exellence!
good and balanced speech - a true statesman!
