Inflated figures: People protest overbilling in city, RYK

Several residents of Bahawalpur staged protest demonstrations against the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) on Thursday for overbilling consumers. The protestors accused Mepco officials of doing little to resolve their problems. They urged the company management to probe the matter and resolve their problems. Speaking to The Express Tribune, Zafar Ahmad, one of the demonstrators, said he had two electricity meters installed at his house. He said he had received Rs43,000 bills. Ahmad said he had gone to the company’s office to complain regarding overbilling. He said the official present had refused to listen to him and had instructed him to pay the billed amount. Separately, scores of people protested against the Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) in Rahim Yar Khan on Thursday for overbilling them. They gathered outside Mepco’s office and had heated arguments with company’s officials. They said certain officials had been deliberately delaying making correction to the bills. They said they held the government responsible for the situation and urged it to intervene to resolve the matter. Abdul Lashari, a fishmonger, said he had received a Rs45,000 bill. Nazeer Ahmad, a driver, said he had received a Rs8,000 bill for the month. The demonstrators urged the Mepco management to correct their bills as quickly as possible.
