Lawyer Mariam Veiszadeh from the Islamophobia Register told reporters that in recent days a pig's head had been impaled on a cross, mosques vandalised and threatening messages spray-painted on property and cars.
"A number of women, particularly in hijab, and children have been verbally abused and threatened," she said.
"In one case a western Sydney mother and her baby were spat on and her pram kicked. In another, a man in Perth tried to rip the scarf off a woman's head."
Australia has raised its terror alert and is tightening its counter-terror laws, aware that some 60 of its citizens have gone to fight alongside fighters in Iraq and Syria and could return.
On Tuesday a Muslim teenager was shot dead by police in Melbourne after stabbing two officers, just days after authorities carried out raids in Sydney and Brisbane to disrupt an alleged plot by Islamic State supporters to abduct and behead a member of the public.
The IS group has also issued a call for Muslims to indiscriminately kill Australians, in a message which also mentioned the US, Canada and France. Australian authorities are taking it seriously.
The grand mufti of Australia, Ibrahim Abu Mohammed, and other religious leaders Wednesday called on the Muslim community to reject IS, which has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria and declared an Islamic "caliphate".
"The recent so-called fatwa from overseas, making reference to Australia as a target, has no religious authority and must be rejected," they said in a statement.
"We call on everyone to exercise restraint and civility. We must not let emotion take over common sense."
The death on Tuesday of 18-year-old Abdul Numan Haider has raised concerns about a further backlash against Muslims.
The Islamic Council of Victoria said it had already received threats "expressing views I would find absolutely abhorrent" in the wake of the incident, secretary Ghaith Krayem told reporters.
"Our society as a whole is feeling quite anxious, and fearful, and it only takes something of this nature to lose a lot of the goodwill built up in the community over a number of years," he said.
Police said they had briefed Muslim leaders shortly after Tuesday's shooting and would strive to keep communications open.
"There will be race tensions, there is no doubt about that," said Victoria Police chief commissioner Ken Lay.
"It is absolutely critical that we give the faith communities in Victoria support, and information, (that) we allow them to share their concerns with us."

@Mark Smith: Spot on. Trouble is the original migrants are not the ones doing this. It's their children who were born there. The responsibility for that will go to the parents who introduce their children to religion way too early - much before the children attain the mental maturity to understand it.
I absolutely agree to all the views above, they are Biting the hands which feed them. I think they deserve the kicking they got in their original places of residence from where they scurried away before finding refuge in Australia.
@gp65: Indians were mostly attacked my muslim Lebanese in Sydney.
@PeaceMaker:
"There is something seriously wrong. I hope the Elders address it before it is too late."
Of course. That "something" is not too difficult to spot if you look at the teachings with an open, honest and contemplative mind and for the fuel that starts, sustains and propagates intolerance, bigotry and terrorism.
Wrong title. It should have been " Australians face Muslim threats". It seems to me that the boy stabbed two police officers.
@Mark Smith : "When all other migrants to Australia live in peace and enjoy such good prosperity, why do these extremist Muslims (and only Muslims) create problems?"
All other immigrants may not be creating problems but is it true that they are living in peace? Certainly many Indian immigrants were target of violent racial attacks a couple of years back and probably this did not make it very peaceful for them. This was the case even though they were not creating problems. Separately, if prams are being kicked or scarves are being pulled - that is wrong and should stop.
There is something seriously wrong. I hope the Elders address it before it is too late.
When all other migrants to Australia live in peace and enjoy such good prosperity, why do these extremist Muslims (and only Muslims) create problems? If they are not happy with the refuge, protection and income support Australians gave them, why not return back to a country that they first ran away from? Why bother other peaceful Australians,
Amen to what learned T Khan wrote. You are given the opportunity to live in peace and make moral and material progress. This opportunity is abused by the hot headed and certainly highly ignorant "defamers of the faith" and thus start all the trouble. They abuse the freedom (in whatever quantity it may be) afforded to them which they did not have in their own countries. There is utterly no sign of Lord's command in their deeds which is "Seek strength in patience and prayers". Their is utterly no sign in their deeds, the deeds of the early Muslims. The early Muslims who wherever they went, never failed to win the hearts of those they came in contact with them. I can only suggest to everyone to be watchful. Look at the deeds of the people before making any judgement about them or associating with them
It was a pretty peaceful community where nobody bothered anybody, until our Muslim brethren started going nuts here. Utterly despicable to see all these young boys from Asylum seeker families, who were given refuge here, now destroying the fabric of society. We can not live peacefully in our own countries and where ever we go we take our filth with us.
Misleading headline. The real headline should be "Australians face Muslim threats".
2 police officers stabbed and you are complaining of threats from Australians. What do you expect.
Indians faced lots of trouble after our team defeated Australia in Cricket. Which is worse?
!8 year old stabbed 2 police officers ? What a community ?
