Comsats convocation: Over 600 students take the next step

ISLAMABAD: The COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) held its 66th convocation at the Convention Centre on Tuesday and awarded 624 graduate and post-graduate degrees to students.

The degrees were awarded to graduates of the BS, MS, MBA and PhD programmes in the disciplines of bioinformatics, biosciences, business administration, computer engineering, telecommunication engineering, electronics, mathematics and architecture.

In total, 624 successful students at the Islamabad campus huddled to receive their degrees while the PhD degrees were awarded to four students; one in Bio-Sciences, two in electrical engineering and one in mathematics.

Graduate and post-graduate students with the highest CGPA also bagged their medals in their respective degree programmes.

CIIT Rector Dr Junaid Zaidi was the chief guest and in his address to the students, said knowledge acquirement and higher education were transforming virtually every aspect of today’s world. “IT institutions have been trusted to be the centre stage of academia,” he said, adding that these bodies had the mandate to evolve a knowledge-based socioeconomic culture in the country to help the nation face the modern challenges of globalisation.

Zaidi also appreciated efforts of the CIIT faculty, management and leadership. He said the university recognises its duties and is committed to provide the best opportunities for learning and personal development within a caring and supportive environment.

Professor Dr Mukhtar Ahmed Khan, chairman of the Higher Education Commission, attended the convocation ceremony and appreciated the achievements of CIIT in his address.

The institute’s report was presented by the varsity’s registrar, Prof Azhar Hussain, who presented details of CIIT programmes and accomplishments and highlighted the research activates, national and international collaborations and current and future academic programmes of CIIT. COMSATS Executive Director and Chairman Board of Governors Dr Imtnan Ellahi Qureshi also attended the ceremony.

The Chancellor’s Gold Medals were awarded to Abdul Basit, Muhammad Usman, Shaista Yousaf, Fawad Badar, Sheikh Muhammad Naveed Iqbal, Nauman Zia Butt, Rija Iqbal, Moiz Khan, Sahar Shabbir, Amna Farooq and Iqra Ishaq.
