Local leaders of the Awami Workers Party (AWP) have called for unity of the left and progressive forces to launch a struggle for real change in the country.
They were speaking at a dialogue titled “The Need for a revolutionary party and revival of the Pakistani Left” organised by the AWP Islamabad-Rawalpindi chapter on Saturday.
AWP Punjab President Dr Aasim Sajjad Akhtar stressed the need for building a revolutionary party and unity of progressive forces to launch a struggle for real change.
“The terms ‘revolution’, ‘inqilab’ and ‘azadi’ have been thrown about recklessly in Pakistan over the past month, as the sit-ins led by Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri have obsessively occupied much of the country’s imagination, egged on by a sensationalist and largely supportive corporate media,” Akhtar said.
For many glued to their television sets, revolutionary transformation appears to be right around the corner, he said.

A great idea and timely move. With mullah and phony revolutionary trying to pretend as revolutionary it is time we expose them and present the real progressive option which demands basic rights for all not simply change of PM with another elite. Those who have properties and families in wealthy countries cannot be Pakistani leaders and a role model for our children. At this time the progressive should hold IK and NS feet in the fire and make them demand and sign the real reforms not just changing of guards. Free education, healthcare, basic nutrition and medicines for all kids, and jobs for all to name a few.
