The ungrateful lot that we are, we do not acknowledge their contribution in educating the masses through well-planned manipulation of history books and for updating the book of alphabets. ‘A’ for Arrogance, ‘B’ for Bahria, ‘C’ for Corruption, etc. But unfortunately for them, the public has become a little A for ‘Aware’ about their B for ‘Bad Governance’ and is now vying for C — Change! The same Change that ‘IK’ (two alphabets our rulers dislike immensely) is talking about and people are asserting their right to.
It was evident by the teacher’s protest outside Karachi’s Bilawal House that fortified walls and cordoned off roads would not serve as a deterrent for very long. Stories of members of the police refusing to become a part of the notorious ‘system’, were telling of the times to come. Yet, if the ‘elected representatives’ are unable to see the signs then let me spell it out — the public is angry! Very, very angry! And they have the right to be. They have been misled and betrayed by flags, banners, rhetoric, slogans and party abbreviations. Despite being kept illiterate and misinformed, they have seen through the Passage of Power from Papa. They have suffered at the hands of the Power for Me League — irrespective of the alphabet that follows the hyphen. They have survived the policies of More Quota for Me and the grabbing hands of All New Plots. They have suffered in silence the excesses of the Must Party Away crowd and helplessly watched the flight of their wealth into the hands of the Multi National Agents. But now they have had enough.
The season is changing and so is the mood of the public. It is unwilling to give way to the cavalcade of ‘VIP’ vehicles running citizens off the streets. It will not watch in silence as its national wealth escapes the country. It will not put up with deaths in ambulances, as a political bigwig holds up traffic to sail through. And it will not give up and go home because an FIR will not be registered. This is not civil disobedience — this is the public’s right as taxpayers and citizens of Pakistan! In the words of our only Quaid, “Democracy is in the blood of Musalmans who look upon complete equality of man fraternity, equality and liberty”.
It is now time — time for the politicians, feudal lords, fake degree holders and beneficiaries of NROs and rigged / fixed elections, to wake up and smell the coffee or chai, since both are spelt with a ‘C’ except that now the chai-pani that they are used to will have to mean just that — tea leaves and water.

Dear Madam, amazing twist of words......but honestly, other than playing with words, are you trying to imply this is the FIRST TIME ever in the history of Pakistan that people have come out on roads/blocked roads and protested? I'm sure you've read history and also lived through most of Pakistan's short history to even suggest such a thing......if you talk of VIP culture being opposed, i hope you also saw Imran Khan's motorcade for his visit to Karachi, which was as long, if not longer than that of any other VIP....when you talk of lodging FIRs for criminal cases, what could be more disgusting to watch the CM of a province dance on a container, while his own responsibility, the citizens of his own province of KP died in flash flooding.......are you saying the season is changing because back benchers of politics are now in the forefront? Madam, the only Tabdeeli that has arrived is of politicians like SMQ, JT, ShRasheed, ArifAlvi and Parvez Khattak changing parties........Tabdeeli/Change is already here. Mobarak Ho!
Very well written and IK has once again done what nobody could have done.....today i feel so proud n all thanx to IMRAN KHAN who made us aware of our rights, taught us how to stand up for our rights n Standing against the Wrongs which has given the corrupts a run for their lives.....Its a big achievement for the whole nation.....so GO NAWAZ GO !
What a brilliant article! People like Ms Bayat give us hope that perhaps there indeed is light at the end of thd tunnel.
@Dipak "This article must be a joke because in Pakistan how many people pay tax?"
As far as income tax is concerned, we do not fare any better either: http://www.deccanherald.com/content/187531/only-277-percent-indias-population.html
so 2.77 percent is enough to fill the pot bellies of our holier than thou ministers. So a similar number should suffice for our western neighbor too :D
this brilliant! pleasantly surprised with your writing
@Mushtaq Ahmad:
Why disagree with civil disobedience? Inconveniencing your life a bit? Civil disobedience is one of the means to bring change in a democracy the other is taking up arms and declaring a revolution. Overthrowing established dysfunctional politics is hard and the best way of doing so is through civil disobedience. All of you educated should be on the streets protesting with them instead of complaining about your inconvenience in your little life.
Brilliant title and a great article. Good one, Ms Bayat. incisive, sharp and right on the money.
I really don't understand how independence for the people of Pakistan and India has brought any benefit to the people. More so in case of Pakistan..
Did we simply get independence from the brutal British Empire only to be rules by the likes of Feudal and Industrialist families of PPP and PML-N and extremist military dictatorship of the Zia Ul Haq regime.
I pray for a day quickly when VVIPs cease to exist. and the POLICE actually works for the people not against the people.
Brilliant...saying it....and saying it with style.
"They have been misled and betrayed by flags, banners, rhetoric, slogans and party abbreviations." Let me correct that a bit, "They 'are' being misled....". Though we have seen a little C for Change no doubt in a couple of years i.e addition of new (2 or three if you count the alphabet after the hyphen which shall not be named) players in the playing field.
For Dipak.Everybody pays taxes.Over 60 percent is collected through sales tax and duties. Moreover corporate income tax is also transferred to the people in shape of higher prices of products.
Personal or political dislike towards writer does not justify to chastise E.T or the writer for publishing or writing this piece respectively. In fact, she comically nailed the predicaments embedded in this Holly Democratic System where destitute are destined to serve the bigwigs instead of other way around. It's ostensible to see the tidal wave of discontent, frustration, anger, anxiety and loathing roaring towards these lords of our destinies. Yes, no more political cavalcades on the roads, good bye to "Laal Bati" (Indian Term) culture. It's time to pay them back what they deserve. NATION DECIDES TO WAKE UP NOW...! As it's the sole trajectory to our the survival...!
Dipak@Khan: The corruption and mafiagiri in Pakistan are owned and operated by Feudals, Military and religion twisting Mullahs.
This is another most corrupt government from N league, it is in fact a mafia, the mafia who are involve in fixing the price and earn money from Poultry, Egg, Milk. Sugar, Steel, Airlines, Property, Power Plant, their allies who funded them for election are running Banks so what is left to us where can we invest what business is not left by these parliamentarians and how can one compete them in business, where they are not involved and how can some else can compete with in business, no is such fool to invest in Pakistan.
Change what we dreaming for and IK has given the hope to the nation.IA Pakistan will rise soon
Mr. Aslam, instead of giving comments on the writer's arguments one by one (you are taking a very illogical route, just showing your derision for the writer or her points. I agree with her on all the points, except the civil disobedience. Now, tell us what is wrong with her points.
This article must be a joke because in Pakistan how many people pay tax?
Maza Aa Gea. We, the educated and uneducated, citizens of this country are sick and tired of these politicians now. Go, go, go.
Brilliant article. We have had enough. IK has truly awakened the nation. Status quo & Monarchy has to end. This is now or never for Pakistan.
This is such a joke. Why is ET editor publishing this irrelevant and poorly-written piece?
Thank you for saing the right thing at the right time Ms.Bayat..You have conveyed right messgae and yes nation has waken up from the slumber it is now thinking and penetrating for its rights the nation has now understood this it can bring change and the power is their hands not within in the hands of few sitting in Parliament.
