Taking action: Seller of pirated books fined

A penalty of US$120,000, three times the value of the seized books, has been imposed on the accused.

KARACHI: The city’s additional export customs collector has established charges of copyright violations and imposed a penalty on Iqbal Kitab Ghar. The proprietors and partners of the bookshop were found to be involved in exporting pirated copies of Oxford University Press textbooks to Saudi Arabia. The Federal Investigation Agency had confiscated eight consignments with 84 cartons of pirated books worth US$40,000 in a raid at Karachi Port in March. An FIR was lodged against Haji Muhammad Gaba, Sher Bano, Tayyab Ahmed Gaba and Anees Ahmed Gaba under the Copyright Ordinance 1962 and Customs Act 1969. A penalty of US$120,000, three times the value of the seized books, has been imposed on the accused.
