September 17, 2014

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday sent more petitions to the home secretary that were filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) against the detention of their party workers. The court directed the official to decide the 11 petitions within four days. The petitioners stated that the detention of political workers was unlawful and unconstitutional. A law officer representing the government submitted a report at the hearing, stating that 2,540 detained people had been released from various jails of Punjab since September 15. He said that the people were taken into custody to maintain law and order. He said that any such application must first be filed with the home secretary. The LHC division bench disposed of the petitions and directed the home secretary to decide the applications within four days and submit a report.
