Academic integrity: HEC holds video conference for plagiarism prevention

Faculty members and management staff of universities to interact with international experts in sessions

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has organised a series of international video conference sessions on “Plagiarism and Academic Integrity” for public and private sector universities.


Three separate sessions were organised over a period of four weeks with resource persons from the United Kingdom and Lebanon.

According to a press release, the sessions, organised as part of HEC efforts for capacity building of universities, provided a platform to faculty members and management staff of universities to interact with international experts and learn best practices being adopted worldwide.

The resource person of the first session was Gary Finnigin, Integration Specialist of i-Paradigms. He joined the video conference from the United Kingdom and talked about integration of the Learning Management System (LMS) with the plagiarism detection software Turnitin. He shared various parameters which universities are required to consider for LMS integration.

The resource person for the second session was Frances Chapman, Head of Nursing and Lecturer in Quality Assurance, Leeds Metropolitan University, United Kingdom. She talked about the plagiarism policy of Leeds Metropolitan University. The third and final session of the video conference series was on Academic Integrity. The resource person was Randa Al Chidiac, Executive Director of Library, Holy Spirit University, Ksalik, Lebanon. She talked about academic integrity and plagiarism prevention practices in Lebanon and shared a universal roadmap for the eradication of plagiarism from academic institutions.

The video conference sessions were organised by the HEC Quality Assurance Division (QAD). The sessions were opened by Dr Iftikhar Ahmad Khan from the QAD, who welcomed the resource persons and participants while sharing the objectives of the HEC for promotion of quality higher education in the country.

He emphasised that universities must focus on the quality of education.
