The show-cause notices were issued to the policemen and former superintendent for failing to respond to the militant attack on the prison. This includes six officers, Abdul Ghafoor, Salahuddin, Tauheed, Noor Aslam, Umar Daraz Khan and Muhammad Nawaz and former DI Khan Central Prison superintendent Ghulam Rabbani.
The notice seeks a reply on their failure which allowed the jailbreak to occur and asks why the officials should not be taken to task. It adds punitive action can be taken against them.
“The officials have been asked to explain the reasons for failing to thwart the attack and why action should not be taken against them,” read the notification. The officials were told to submit their replies within seven days otherwise proceedings would be initiated against them.
It added Inspector General Prisons Kifayatullah Khan has been directed to proceed against 67 wardens. The chief minister has already directed the K-P police chief to start proceedings against the policemen, read the notice.
In July 2013, Tehreek-e-Taliban militants, armed with mortars and grenades, stormed DI Khan Central Prison.
The militants had come disguised in police uniforms. They escaped with 230 prisoners, including suspected militants, after a protracted encounter with guards and security forces. At least 12 people, including four policemen, were killed and seven others were wounded in the brazen assault.
The jail held up to 5,000 prisoners, including around 300 militants involved in attacks on security forces and in sectarian killings.
