A notification in this regard has been issued by the Sindh Interior Ministry.
The ban will be effective from 12am today (Thursday) and will be in place till September 19.
The decision comes a few hours after Jamia Banoria teacher Maulana Masood was killed in the Hyderi area of Karachi.
Further, on September 7, Allama Akbar Kumaili, son of Jafria Alliance Pakistan chief and former Muttahida Qaumi Movement senator Allama Abbas Kumaili was killed along with his companion in Azizabad locality.
According to sources, the imposition of the ban was recommended by the police to avoid further possible target killings.
“In all the cases of targeted killings, investigations revealed that the armed motorcyclists were behind the incidents,” a senior police officer seeking anonymity told The Express Tribune.
“We are expecting more incidents of similar bloodshed and subsequently have requested the home department to impose the ban.”
The officer added that the ban could be extended if need be.
Senior citizens, journalists, women and personnel of law enforcement agencies will be exempted from the ban.
Earlier, the Sindh government had imposed a five day ban on pillion riding in Karachi to ensure security on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.
