PESHAWAR:

A man accused of brutally murdering a woman for resisting an attempted robbery was denied bail by the Peshawar High Court on Monday.

Prosecutor Shah Nawaz Khan informed the single-member bench of Justice Ikramullah Khan that the accused Nawaz Khan was arrested in April and charged with breaking into businessman Ghulam Abbas’s house in Pipal Mandi and murdering his wife. He added the accused was accompanied by an accomplice and together they broke into the house with the intent to rob it. However, when Abbas’s wife Sumaira resisted, the accused killed her and escaped, said Shah Nawaz. He was later arrested by the police. Justice Khan then rejected Nawaz Khan’s bail request and sent him back to jail.

Set free

In a separate case, anti-terrorism court judge Abdur Rauf acquitted two suspects in a kidnapping for ransom case, after the prosecution failed to provide any evidence against them.

Advocate Abdul Fayyaz told the court that Misbahullah, a resident of Swabi and Mir Ahmad Jan, a resident of Peshawar, were arrested for kidnapping Lal Muhammad in November, 2013.

Fayyaz said his clients were arrested based on suspicion and charged under Section 365-A of the Pakistan Penal Code but no proof had been found against them. Judge Rauf then released the two men.
