A four-judge bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Nasirul Mulk heard a petition filed by Lahore High Court Rawalpindi bench President Shafqat Bhatti, seeking that all the political parties be directed to resolve the current political issue within the parameters of the Constitution. While issuing notices to parties mentioned in the petition, the bench also asked the petitioner to add names of other parties that are also part of the parliament.
The petition sought court's intervention stating that there is a lack of trust among political parties while there is an immediate need to handle the critical situation, adding that the situation has reached a point where the court should step in to protect the constitution.
PAT counsel Ali Zafar, however, opposed this suggestion to which the Chief Justice replied that it is not only a political dispute but also a constitutional matter.
CJ's clarification
During the hearing, the chief justice also clarified his position regarding PTI President Javed Hashmi’s claim yesterday that the incumbent CJP had an understanding with PTI chief Imran Khan in toppling the PML-N government.
The chief justice rejected Hashmi’s claim, adding that he had no direct or indirect understanding with PTI chief Imran Khan in this regard.
He said that he had met Imran Khan only once regarding the introduction of biometric polling system in local government elections in KP and petitions pending in election tribunals when he was acting Chief Election Commissioner, adding that Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan and three other PTI members were part of the meeting.
Justice Jawwad S Khawaja added that individuals do not matter as the whole bench decides the case in the apex court.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali commented that it has become a feature of our society to level baseless allegations against institutions to malign them, without any concern of consequences.
He also expressed concern over the attack on PTV headquarters and other state buildings yesterday. “We have shown restraint in this matter,” he added.
During the hearing, the PTI counsel Hamid Khan requested the bench to exercise its suo moto power to end the ongoing political impasse.
Justice Mian Saqib Nisar made it clear that whenever there will be an issue of political justice, the court will intervene, adding that that it is the apex court that should decide the scope of fundamental rights.
The hearing of the case was adjourned until tomorrow.

Well it's more of SC duty to prioritise and handle the brutal killings first and then maybe talk about the red zone crisis which is definitely not unconstitutional. If NS is so clean why doesn't he respond to the numerous allegations on him?
@sophya totally agree!
Inqilab and azadi Zindabad!
Why has little Islamabad become so important? Red zone my foot!
Thanks u tribune , to put that picture here for SC related news . This is really a classic and sad but 100% true
Pakistan is the failed state and failed nation in the world history. After 66 years of worst history and experiences nothing has been learnt from. The percentage of corruption, political power play, injustice and propaganda and fake wars and operations has brought both state and nation at the edge of worst destruction and failure. Religion, power, status. nation and propaganda is being using as tactical tools to divide and rule over the people and exploit them. The institutions are worst corrupt, no rule of law, respect for constitution, land and having no real and true faith but against the true teaching of Islam.
Did Supreme Court act when 14 people shot dead in Model Town? No When Nawaz and Shahbaz shut down Punjab? No
@Fida: How can the judges declare the long march unconstitutional when they were themselves restored as a result of one. how can they declare Army's intervention illigal when they were restored by one. Read the reality on the ground. Rigged election is teh basis of all this. RIGGED ELECTION IS UNACCEPTABLE AT ANY COST- DEMOCRACY OR NO DEMOCRACY
How does SC get the time to take up such cases at such short notice while other equally important cases remain unresolved for years - Asghar Khan case, rigging cases and so on.
the supporter of rotten and corrupt status quo are so shaken that they are running towards judiciary which is 3rd pillar of corruption
if the long march of Iftikhar Ch for restoration of judges job were according to law, then this protest and long march is also legal
@salman: Although I'm a big supporter of IK, i think JH might actually be saying the truth. Qadri didn't come out of thin air somebody definitely sent him. I wouldn't normally support the army interfering in politics but the way it sounds is that the army actually has a plan this time rather then just holding a coup. Maybe if we're lucky we might finally be seeing the end days of the curse that is feudalism.
Imran Khan was trying to impress the PTI core committee by telling them that army and CJ were on board. Pulling a fast one so that they will continue in this foolish dharna. Now he could be in trouble.
why should Supreme court interfere? After what Hashmi said .. what ever will supreme Court do PML-N/ PTI will implicate them. Her kisi ko us ki izat payari hay. Good stance SC, let these buggers fight and end their own respect.
And what does this mean...
Sc should hanged those involved in model town and Isb killings...Pakistan citizen's life is more important then these buildings and also check the news regarding that PTV incident was Inside job...
Seriously? the residents of Islamabad? are in trouble due to dharna? since when have the residents of islamabad started living in the Red Zone??? and please stop this disinformation... just look at the map...the PM house is a good 2 kilometer from the site of the protests... but i think the 2.5 billion distributed through IB in the media is talking now! Long live pakistan... Long live Nawaz monarchy...get ready for the 30 year rule of Maryam and co...
Thousands of cases are stuck in courts for decades not just years, millions of people have been toiling for years for a semblance of justice but our honorable courts have all the time for politics, politicians and "democracy but none for common people.
Where is SC standing when it comes to brutual killings in lhr & now in Islamabad. Whether PAT & PTI r right or wrong, it another matter (? Humans life is much more imp then buildings, state or any other thing. Whr is SC on rigging elegation, rape, kick back, in justice & de merit.
When the whole families are getting high jobs without any merit? When one or two faimilies acting like Royal kingdom. When PM himself lies in the Parliament?
After all the looters & hypocrites have ganged up in the parliament and there is no hope left. It is certainly an opportunity lost for which a very heavy price will be paid by the people. May the Almighty have mercy on us and Pakistan.
It seems SC is sleeping since August 14. They are just watching this Tamasha in Islamabad. SC should order the protestors to vacate Islamabad. Residents of the city are in much trouble due to unconstitutional dharna of Imran Khan and Tahir ul Qadri.
Is this long march and dharna as per law? Is Supreme Court blind? Are they not listening unconstitutional demands of protestors. Now this drama backed by Establishment should be ended.
This is insufficient. Action should be taken against both anarchists Imran Khan and Qadri.
Supreme Court should order the end of this illegal dharna. Imran and Qadri should be arrested and punished.
What new is SC saying that haven't already been said. SC under article 10 should order Army to clear red zone from these violent mob just like they cleared PTV building. Army clearing PTV building but not the red zone raises lots of eyebrows and make's army's role questionable.
A sensible decision. Sanity Prevails somewhere at last.
SC should send a suto motu notice to JH. His allegations were serious undermining SC's credibility.
