KARACHI:

The South and West Asia Women’s Cup, initially scheduled to take place from September 10 to 13 at the Moin Khan Academy in Karachi, has been postponed due to lack of financial support.

According to Softball Federation of Pakistan (SFP) Secretary Haider Khan Lehri, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has yet to allot funds to the SFP, due to which the organisers had to postpone the event.

“The funds that we collected on our own aren’t enough, as the minimum cost is coming to Rs5 million,” said Lehri.

The federation will meet the PSB officials on September 7 to discuss the matter of finances and to announce the next date for the championship.

“All the countries had confirmed their participation except India, who had some security issues. However, they’ve been informed about the delay and are cooperating with us.”

The secretary added that softball plays a big role in the international arena and the national federation is trying to promote it in the country while simultaneously establishing strong relations with the International Softball Federation.

The Cup is part of Pakistan’s preparations for the 2016 ISF Women’s World Softball Championship, and Lehri stated that they were in talks with the international federation about organising more tours in Pakistan and vice versa in order to help form a strong national team.

Meanwhile, the training camp in Quetta was also called off and will begin in Karachi after the new dates are announced.
