NEW DELHI:

Protests broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s communally- sensitive district of Muzaffarnagar after four Muslim students were attacked by a group of people in New Delhi’s Jat Colony.

The trouble started when the four youths had gone for tuition classes in the colony on Friday evening. A group of people allegedly attacked them and claimed that they were indulging in eve-teasing, police said. The boys were rescued by the police and were admitted to hospital.

Irate protesters laid siege at a police station demanding action against the miscreants who had beaten up the boys.

Police have registered a case against 150 people for the violence and named three miscreants. Superintendent of police Sarvan Kumar told journalists that some people tried to block the road at Meenakshi Chowk last evening but additional forces were rushed and the situation brought under control.

Security has been tightened and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in sensitive areas in Muzaffarnagar.

The Uttar Pradesh district has witnessed a string of communal incidents since the riots in September last year that left over 60 people dead and hundreds of others displaced.

Tension resurfaced in Muzaffarnagar when cases were registered against 150 people for capitalising on a clash between students where one group was attached for allegedly trying to tease girls of another group.

The incident was a repeat of the riots which broke out a few months ago in the district.

@Rakib: @AKumar is not doubting the veracity of the news item. He is doubting the agenda of ET in picking and choosing articles that portray only one community as being targeted without balancing it with articles about the same community targeting others. I agree with him.

If the news is accurate, thank ET & then write to your MP (if you are an Indian) asking him to take it up with Home Minister.
