ISLAMABAD: As his party continues to pile up pressure on the government, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has urged President Asif Ali Zardari to undertake massive political and economic reforms to improve governance.

In a letter, the PML-N chief urged Zardari to implement decisions by the country’s top courts and take steps to revive the collapsing economy.

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan shared parts of the letter’s contents with the National Assembly here on Wednesday.

Sharif advised President Zardari to implement all Supreme Court decisions, including one calling for reopening of graft cases against him abroad. The president was also urged to decide how to handle loss-making public sector enterprises which are inflicting an annual loss of over Rs300 billion on the national treasury.

Another suggestion urged the government to achieve in the current session of the parliament a consensus to replace the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) with a new commission. Sharif also called for investigating the sugar crisis, withdrawing recent hike in petroleum prices and reducing the size of a ‘bulky’ cabinet.
