A bullet header from Karim Benzema and a late Cristiano Ronaldo strike allowed Real Madrid to kick off their La Liga campaign with a 2-0 victory over newly promoted Cordoba.
The visitors made it difficult for Real and constantly threatened the goal post in order to find an equaliser but Ronaldo ended any thoughts of their comeback with a goal late on.
“The most important thing was to start with a win which we did even though we had to suffer,” said Real Madrid coach Carlos Ancelotti.
Real beat Sevilla to win the Uefa Super Cup but were poor during the pre-season being outplayed by Atletico Madrid in the domestic Super Cup, losing 2-1 on aggregate.
