KARACHI: After declaring that a drought had hit Tharparkar, the Sindh government has decided to establish a Kohistan Development Authority to deal with drought like situations in the area.

While speaking at a press conference on Monday, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said that the government was also trying to control the situation in Tharparkar where wheat will be distributed for free. They will, he said, also ensure that people have access to potable water and healthcare facilities.

"Reverse Osmosis Plants and hand pumps are being set up in the area," he said. "The Sindh government is providing families with solar fans and electricity in areas where they don't have access to any." He added that the Pakistan Peoples Party chairperson Asif Ali Zardari was monitoring the situation personally and action would be taken against negligent officers.

Memon, who is also the Local Government Minister, said that his department had formed a monitoring committee comprising political workers, traders, journalists and other stakeholders of Karachi to monitor the supply of water in different parts of the city. "This committee will suggest what action can be taken against officials at the Karachi Water and Sewage Board (KWSB) who are guilty of corruption," he said. "The committee will come up with a formula on how to distribute water and how to monitor it in different areas of the city." He added that they will conduct an impartial inquiry against KWSB officials believed to be involved in water theft.
