Angered by the meeting, people gathered to protest outside the mission, demanding that the Pakistani High Commisioner be sent back. There were reports of clashes between the police and protesters.
Earlier on Tuesday, Hurriyet Conference chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani said that Kashmir is an international issue and not an internal issue of India, IANS reported.
"First of all when they say Kashmir is an internal issue, it is against the reality. The issue of Jammu and Kashmir is an international issue and it should be solved," Geelani, who is in Delhi to meet Pakistan's high commissioner, told reporters at the airport.
"It is unfortunate that the Indian government has cancelled the (foreign secretary-level) talks," he said.
"As long as promises made to us are not fulfilled, this issue will remain unsolved," said Geelani.
Hurriyet leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the Indian government has overreacted.
"New Delhi overreacted on the issue...There has to be a peaceful, political resolution to the Kashmir issue," Farooq told a news channel.
The Indian government had on Monday called off the August 25 foreign secretary-level talks after Pakistani diplomat met with Kashmiri leaders in what Pakistan called a matter of routine before any bilateral talks.
While India called Pakistan's engagement with the Kashmiri leaders as unacceptable, Pakistan termed India’s decision to cancel the talks as unfortunate and a setback to the process.

I have a curious feeling that this Syed Jalaluddin Kashmiri is actually some unemployed dude typing from a cyber cafe in Karachi.
Thank you all Pakistanis for your loving and generous responses. We Kashmiri people have an deep love for Pakistan, and are proud to have friends and allies like you in our freedom struggle against Indian occupation.
I have great hope that one day, Pakistan and Kashmir will be one nation, united by Islam and common blood.
@WB: Too much Coffee, I believe!? Calm down, buddy! Take it easy. It's ok! It will be Ok tommorow too. Save your health!
@Maula Jatt: "It is designed after Taj Mahal"
"We" who? Do you think you are a mughal???? Are you from persia or central asia?
@Maula Jatt:
You built Taj Mahal? So, what were your ancestors? Suppliars of granites or engineers or masons or architects?
Are even sure than your ancestors were Muslims when Taj Mahal was built?
And from which angle does it resemble Taj Mahal? This resembles a mosque.
You don't have to defend it. It's Pakistan's right to build a building that resembles a mosque or a pagoda.
I was not questioning Pakistan's right.
But my question was why? What is the reason? Just out of love for Islam or making some political statement?
And if it indeed resembles Taj Mahal, they my question is why does it resemble Taj Mahal? What's the reason behind it?
@Hobi Haripur wala:
There is a saying in my language that roughly translates to: A man opens his mouth to reveal his true color.
In your case I advice you not to write comments if you cannot understand simple English.
@ WB: It is designed after Taj Mahal, which we also built. Not everything with a dome is a mosque.
@Abdul: Don't pretend to be Muslim.
@Anand: Whoever wants to live in shariah land can go and do so. I am happy that my ancestors chose to live in India. India is the only country in Asia where all Muslims are free to practice their religion and yes I voted for Modi.
@unbelievable:
"I wonder how Pakistan would react if India started to meet with Balochistan separatist in Islamabad?"
That would be same as a Pakistani diplomat meeting Insurgents from India's far east. Situation in India's far east is same as Baluchistan in Pakistan, i.e. internal matter of respective countries.
Whereas Kashmir is an International issue, and involves 3 parties, Kashmiris, Pakistan an India. Kashmiri leader the diplomat met is pro negotiations and not supportive if militancy. Be realistic, why would you undermine someone who wants to talk and seeks a negotiated solution?
I agree with that demand. The high commissioner should be declared persona non grata and required to leave. Only, I am not Government of India.
@WB: Why is a paid hindu troll allowed these remarks? about a Mosque? Is there a law against designing a building like a mosque? ET...do you get paid to allow hindu trolls to post such remarks.? Who is paying You? Would you print a similar remark regarding a hindu temple from a Muslim? No Your moderators should be ashamed of themselves. Why this policy.?
@unbelievable I think you need to get you examples right. Kashmir doesn't become part of India just because you think it is (and likewise for Pakistan) so it is a disputed territory that needs all stakeholders agreed to a solution for the peace to prevail, otherwise, nothing will change and we will continue to live in 1947 forever generation after generation.
@k: This News is specifically on India, then why are you surprised if Indians are airing their views? Sparring here is anyday better than all those cross border firings and the daily Nautanki played out at Wagah border.
I read all the comments and for a second I paused to check which newspaper I am reading is it Tribune or The Hindu or India Times, then I checked the URL, surprised most of the comments are from Indian fiends and covers only one side of the balance. Seems Pak writers are either too busy in Marches or comments by Pakistanis have been "Moderated". In any case it is a small issue in the context, every time close to the election or independence day these meetings are held to get goodwill from sitting government in Pak and to put pressure on Indian Govt. Issue of Kashmir is like Palestine it will never be solved.
@Libra: Be librated, take one way ticket to Islamabad. Oh sorry that is taken over by Imran Khan. Karachi perhaps? but then you have Sindh nationalists there. Ok maybe Baluchistan? But how about BLA?
India should abide by international law and alow a UN referrendum on Kashmiris to decide their future, whatever that may be.
There needs to be an independent war crimes commission to review the human rights abuses by the Indian occupation forces.
@Mohammad Syed Husain: Would Pakistan allow the Indian High Commissioner to meet with the Pakistani separatists? I doubt it.
@unbelievable: You can't possibly compare Kashmir with Baluchistan. Kashmir is a dispute territory and both countries claim it's their part. Whereas Baluchistan is NOT disputed and India cannot possibly claim it's their part.
@syed jalal kashmiri,
Kashmiri Pandits are not Kashmiris. Cool.
It is, since you are squatters. No wonder, Kashmiri Pandits are not fighting for independence, for the simple reason they are the sons/daughters of the soil. And their ethnic, religious, cultural, mental make up belongs to the sub continent, while yours does not.
@Dipak: Ar least people in Pakistan are better off than people of India. People in Pakistan have a better life including better food than poverty stricken India. Grass would be only food very soon for Indians.
@Syed Jalal Kashmiri:
We will be with Kashmiris struggle to get separated from India. No doubt world has a different attitude when Muslims struggle for freedom. If non Muslims the whole world yell and howl together. Recent examples are East Timor and Sudan. There are 19 different freedom movements in India and Kashmir shall be liberated first.
@lunacyassailam: Dear you are living in fools paradise, with the kind of views you have expressed here. Any way best wishes.
This is my message to all my beloved Pakistanis: Look here in the comments section and see the hatred and lack of respect for Kashmiris' Muslim faith and our ethnic identity. Just because Kashmiris are a Muslim nation doesn't mean our freedom struggle is any less legitimate.
If Pakistan ever turns away from Kashmir, then India will massacre us the same way they have done to Muslims in Jammu, Sikh Punjab, Gujurat, Hyderabad, UP, Bihar, and Assam. For Kashmiris today, Pakistan is the only friend we have in the world. Pakistan is our eternal supporter.
India wants to re-write the history of Kashmir with the blood of Muslim Kashmiris and settle Hindu fanatics from other states to deprive us, but we won't let that happen. We will keep fighting until our war for freedom is won.
Thank you Pakistan and Pakistanis for always being by our side. We are alive today only because of the love of Pakistanis and the blessings of God.
Pakistan must exercise strain in relationship with India. This is the only language they shall understand. Lenient language is not spoken in India.
@Virkaul: You could be right but; where are the other half of those people you just mentioned living in India, that give you the right to speak for "your people"... based on their national origins, race or religion... As in the case of Kashmir. That's a necessary prelude in world politics these days to make a case, no?
Thank you ET, for the enlightenment of your readers, around the world!
What I heard on Pakistan TV was very different. I heard Kamran Shaheed saying that BJP was holding protests in India in support of Nawaz Sharif government and against the long march by Imran Khan and Dr. Qadri.
In any case I agree with @WB that Indian government should get rid of these jokers and rowdies from politics.
Thank god we finally have a government with some guts now, Kudos to Modi for canceling the meeting.
Stopping the Hurriyat will simply give them more credibility back home - so let them meet the Pak High Commissioner and their handlers and return home, as usual, empty handed. A Govt which cannot control ceasefire violations or anarchist protesters who camp outside their parliament clearly would not be able to deliver on any (unlikely) decisions that would emerge from the Foreign Secretary meeting - so India loses nothing from this hiatus in talks.
@Mohammad Syed Husain,
You are squatters in Kashmir as you are in Constantinople and Jerusalem. The state (Kashmir named after Sage Kashyap) and the capital (Srinagar) are either derived or are Hindu names. So, what are the descendents of the Arab culture doing in Kashmir ?
Let Dr TCA Raghavan, the Indian High Commissioner start inviting Baloch nationalists from Marri, Bughti, Mengal tribes as well as leaders of BLA, BRA, BPLF, PFAR, and Pashtun nationalists for talks to bring peace to Balochistan and Waziristan.
All this attention is spreading in Indian social media.Pakistan is making a grave mistake by radicalising Hindutva once again.As usual the casualties will be innocent muslims in many parts of India, one more military humiliation for the Islamic republic and a determined effort to evict musalmans from kashmir.Everything was quiet...Pakistan started this.
Overreaction, simply that's it! Pak has been meeting Hurriyat, nothing new! What's new is... Modi!
@Mohammad Syed Husain: You're right. Kashmir's 5000-year association with Hindu culture does not go away because a religious sect decides to breakaway and now want the land that they took by force. Hindus were weak then. They are not now. Squatters will be squatters no matter how long the time. India will not let the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir issue go away either. We will outlast Pakistan on this and take what is rightfully ours.
Wait for thousand years and keep eating grass.
The leaders of a failed movement are meeting the envoy of a failed state. What difference does it make?
Kashmir issue was resolved when 98000 war criminal Pakistani soldiers were returned in 1972 as per Simla Agreement. Pakistan has to fulfill the agreement and give Northern Area & Baltisthan to India. Pakistan needs to ask China to give back Aksai Cheen which Pakistan gifted to China.
I feel this was an attempt to create a drama to divert media attention from current political situation. But at any rate e need to keep our stance strong. Let the Indians whine as much as they like.
I wonder how Pakistan would react if India started to meet with Balochistan separatist in Islamabad?
Well done Pakistan, once again. Keep on shooting at your own feet! I wonder how far would you travel before you embrace reality.
Kashmir is an integral part of Pakistan. If India thinks they can escape after electing a genocidal beast as their Pm then answer is a big No. These violent protests and storming at our embassy over shows how much they care and desire for peace without giving up illegal occupational stance on Kashmir.Our leaders should demand an apology over this.mishandling of the situation untill close down our embassy in India as it is useless to have relations and talks who do not care about kadhmiris.
Live and Let Live Bro. Don't be jealous of your neighbors.
Live and Let Live Bro.
@Mohammad Syed Husain: Bad Decision. Live and Let Live Bro's.
Good show Pakistan, don't get browbeaten by India on this. Kashmir still remains the longest unresolved issue between Pakistan and India and it won't go away just like that.
