MANSEHRA: A newly-recruited constable was injured when her cousin allegedly attacked her with iron rods in public over her decision to join the police force. Kausar Bibi shared this with the media from her hospital bed in Mansehra on Tuesday.

A resident of Nara Doga village, Kausar Bibi said she joined the police force last week after passing the test and interview. She went to Police Lines on Monday to complete final formalities and was attacked as she left.

“I was on my way back in the evening when my cousin Adil and his two accomplices came up to me and forced me into a Suzuki van,” said Kausar Bibi. “My cries for help caught the attention of some passers-by, prompting my cousin to throw me out of the van, but not before hitting me on the head and face with iron rods.”

According to Bibi, her decision to join the police force triggered a fight with her maternal uncle which lasted for several days. She said her decision infuriated her family and led to her cousin Adil, who wanted to marry her, ‘punishing’ her in public.

The injured constable was shifted to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital where she is now admitted for treatment. The police registered a criminal case against Adil and his two unidentified abettors for attacking and injuring a member of the police force.
