Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has dismissed the possibility of a military takeover in the wake of heavy political tensions in the country, as both Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan and Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Dr Tahirul Qadri prepared to lead over a million supporters to the federal capital to protest against the PML-N government.
In an interview with Bloomberg News on Tuesday, Asif termed the relationship between his party’s government and the military as cordial and fine, and said he did not see the possibility of intervention by the country’s powerful army.
“We [the PML-N government and the army] have complete consensus, complete agreement on foreign policy and armed forces requirements,” the minister was quoted by the New York-based business news service as saying. “I don’t see any possibility of military intervention or any coup.”
“We still have four years to go… we have an agenda to complete,” added Asif.
Imran Khan seeks to push the government into holding fresh elections in the country.
