Celebrities are often viewed as being larger than life, with fans living their lives through their idols. But little do they know that behind their glittering images, lie gruesome realities. Many of these celebrities, who danced with death when they made challenging career choices, took the last bow seemingly at their own will. We take a look back at a few of these celebrities.
Heath Ledger
It is clear that the life of The Dark Knight’s Joker was anything but funny ha-ha. Ledger, who took the world by storm with his brilliant performance in the film, was found dead in his bed on January 22, 2008 due to acute intoxication by drugs including temazepam and alprazolam. The Australian actor and director received acclaim for his stint in several films such as Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Casanova (2005).
Divya Bharti
The bubbly Indian actor, who starred in the film Deewana (1992) opposite Shahrukh Khan, tragically fell to her death from a five story tulsi apartment building in Versova, Mumbai in 1993 while inebriated. Regarded as a beauty queen in Iran, the actor’s loss hit many fans, alongside family and friends, including actor Govinda.
Tony Scott
The British film director and producer committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California in 2012. Scott contributed invaluably to Hollywood with major blockbusters such as Top Gun (1986), True Romance (1993) and Déjà Vu (2006). Although the reason behind his death remains unknown, sources suggest it may have been catalysed by the heartbreak of possibly being diagnosed with brain cancer.
Guru Dutt
Legendary star Guru Dutt of Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) fame was found dead in 1964 in his Mumbai apartment after having a mix of alcohol and sleeping pills. The reasons, which could have possibly led to his suicide, include his sleeping disorder and his wife distancing herself from him. It’s haunting to recall the words he once said, “Paisa hai, sab kuch hai, par kuch bhi nahi raha.”
