UPPER DIR: At least three militants were killed in a joint operation carried out by the security forces and peace militia in Sonai Darra Barawal Upper Dir, military’s media wing said on the Sunday.

During a media briefing, Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Aqeel Ahmad showed the bodies of the militants, who were killed in the pre-dawn raid targeting a peace militia member’s house.

Flanked by Deputy Commissioner Upper Dir Dr Imran Hameed Sheikh and DPO Javed Khan, the ISPR spokesperson also briefed the media regarding the ongoing operation in Scouts Fort Chakyatan.

The official revealed that Qari Usman alias Abubakar, one of the three militants killed during the operation, was a key former Taliban commander for Upper Dir.

DPO Javed Khan said that Usman had orchestrated terrorist attacks, adding that he was also behind the attack on a police van in Khwago Obba area in 2009 and destroying many schools.

Khan said that the slain Taliban commander was an expert in making improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

The ISPR official said a cache of ammunition, including hand grenades, Kalashnikov and cartridges were also seized from the terrorists.

He said that the security forces received a tipoff about militant infiltration from neighboring Afghanistan’s Kunra province to Upper Dir, which prompted the security beef up in the district.
