'Parliamentarians own 90% of sugar mills'

MQM leader demands import of sugar be handed over to private sector, action be taken against those delaying import.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar on Tuesday stated that 90 per cent of the sugar mills are owned by parliamentarians.

Speaking to the media at Nine Zero in Karachi, Sattar said that the cause of inflation is the incapability of the government and the reasons behind it must be addressed.

He said that elements responsible for the delay in the import of sugar should be brought to light and that the process of importing sugar should be handed over to the private sector.


Sugar is being sold at Rs125 per kilogramme in many parts of the country.

General Secretary of the Karachi Retail Grocers Group (KRCGG) has stated that a 100 kg bag is being sold for Rs10,000 in the whole sale market. The price being charged in Orangi, Korangi, Shah Latif town and other areas of Karachi is as high as Rs125 a kg.

The commodity is being sold for Rs105 to Rs115 per kg in interior Sindh.

In the Lahore, the open market price in Rs110 per kg and Rs120 per kg in Faisalabad.
