'Parliamentarians own 90% of sugar mills'

MQM leader demands import of sugar be handed over to private sector, action be taken against those delaying import.

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) deputy convener Dr Farooq Sattar on Tuesday stated that 90 per cent of the sugar mills are owned by parliamentarians.

Speaking to the media at Nine Zero in Karachi, Sattar said that the cause of inflation is the incapability of the government and the reasons behind it must be addressed.

He said that elements responsible for the delay in the import of sugar should be brought to light and that the process of importing sugar should be handed over to the private sector.

Sugar is being sold at Rs125 per kilogramme in many parts of the country.

General Secretary of the Karachi Retail Grocers Group (KRCGG) has stated that a 100 kg bag is being sold for Rs10,000 in the whole sale market. The price being charged in Orangi, Korangi, Shah Latif town and other areas of Karachi is as high as Rs125 a kg.

The commodity is being sold for Rs105 to Rs115 per kg in interior Sindh.

In the Lahore, the open market price in Rs110 per kg and Rs120 per kg in Faisalabad.

Asif Aziz | 14 years ago | Reply Artificial sugar crisis is crated by the MNAs and parliamentarians and the present government was equally involved in this crisis.Now provincial and federal governments and sugar mills association are blaming and accusing each other of this sugar crisis and sugar mills association president clearly declared that sugar mills don’t have enough stock.This game of making profit and money amongst the members provincial and national assemblies,federal government and sugar mills association is driving the nation towards mentally disturbance and torture and our leaders are just giving hopes of betterment and prosperity.No one is accepting the responsibility of this artificial sugar crisis.

True Man | 14 years ago | Reply Dear, Our goverment, politican of all parties having shares in sugar bussiness and goverment officer who are responsible to impliment the law are responsible for that. We should change our approach, from population to a nation. We should standup and ask all irrespective of rank, association with parties or relation. Are we nation or poplution. If we do not stand I can see a revelution in future. Allah bless our beloved mother land.

noor Lodi | 14 years ago | Reply It is actually quite simple to bring the sugar mafia down. Stop eating and drinking ALL sugar and sugar related items. Sugar is not addictive to the body, it is usually harmful and really has no nutritional value. So my advice to my country men, women and children is, send a powerful statement to the this mafia. Stop eating and drinking ALL sugar related things and watch their house of cards crumble in no time. Do what Americans did to British. The Boston tea party. They stopped drinking tea. And I tell you, after a week you will not miss anything.
