Pakistan cueists unleash new tactics

Players opt for targeted practice ahead of Asian events.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s cueists are opting for targeted practice in order to shake off the rust and get ready for the upcoming Asian 6-Red and Team Championships, which will be played in Karachi from August 16 to 21.

The training camp is currently under way in Karachi at national player Khurram Agha’s snooker club from 10am to 5pm local time.

The Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) has fielded four teams, comprising duos of Mohammad Asif-Mohammad Sajjad, Imran Shehzad-Shahid Aftab, Shahram Changezi-Asjad Iqbal and Sohail Shehzad-Mohammad Bilal.

Meanwhile, those who will be participating in the 6-Red championship are Asif, Sajjad, Mohammad Asif Toba, Asjad, Sohail, Shahid, Hamza Akbar and Abdul Sattar.

“We’re currently trying to get targeted practice under our belts, which will help us deal with pressure situations,” Asif told The Express Tribune during the camp.

“Obviously there are situations in the match when you are down 60-10 and you need to get back. For such circumstances, we’re already practicing frames being down to big deficits and making a comeback from there on.”

Asif will go into the Asian 6-Red Championship as the defending champion.

As far as the practice for team event is concerned, all four teams are busy in playing against one another on a single league-basis by setting up a tournament to ensure the competition level remains high between them.
