They say sport is not just a hobby, but a way of life — it is not just physical exercise, but a test of character and expression. But how can one really express themselves freely when there is uncertainty over even getting an air ticket to the Games and all one can do is follow the news to see if the athletes will be making it to Glasgow. The Pakistan hockey team — playing the country’s national sport — did not get a chance to feature at the Games. The wrestlers did and won two medals. In addition, the judo and boxing events also saw Pakistan’s name in the list of medal winners. The sports board has admitted that there were not too many medal hopes to begin with. And the medal count — as low as it was — was not surprising either.
The players alone cannot be blamed for this. Even with the right tools at their disposal, there is still a massive gap between Pakistan and countries like England, Australia or even India, when it comes to basic sports infrastructure. It would take years of hard work, dedication and judicious allocation of resources to come close to their level. But when you have officials at the helm who do not even care about the country’s participation at major events, let alone the sports infrastructure in the country, then there is not much the players can do either. So, all we can do is sit back and critique the show.

@Feroz:
Despite all the lacking that you mentioned, India still manged a respectable 5th position with 64 medals. What does that tell you?
Let me make it easy for you to understand....Hard work and discipline. The 2 primary components required for excellence in everything. You can have every infrastructure possible like you see in the gulf countries. But that is not sufficient. I am very proud of the fact that India has done so well despite all the material shortcomings.
Let us not gloat here. Let us see how we perform in Asian Games or Summer Olympics where most of our advantage in the commonwealth is eaten away by other nations...
@sharath chandran: its not India we are competing against ..in fact I know Pakistanis who cheer India against the other European teams ..
South Asian countries lack a sporting culture, sporting facilities and infrastructure, world class Stadiums and good coaches. In light of the above it is a miracle that any medals are won in global competitions. Most schools of today do not even have play grounds to encourage those interested in taking up sport. Lets be reasonable and not heap blame solely on Sportsmen who have to defy heavy odds to succeed.
The “Real Obstacles” faced by Pakistan were NOT “disorganised nature of the athletes’ preparation”, “uncertainty regarding their participation in the Games”, “continuing misfortunes of the Pakistan Olympic Association” and “massive gap between Pakistan and countries like England, Australia or even India, when it comes to basic sports infrastructure”. All the previous reasons are liberal, secular and Un-Islamic explanations of Pakistan’s performance which given that Pakistan is an “Islamic Republic”, “Ideological Muslim State”, “Citadel of Islam”, “Safe haven for the Muslims of the Indian Sub-Continent’ and “Sole Islamic Nuclear Weapon Power” cannot be true. The “Real Obstacles” faced by Pakistan WAS the mental anguish to Islamic sensibilities at insult of use of dogs in the game’s opening ceremony, acute sorrow caused by Jewish Israel’s actions in Muslim Gaza, toll of fasting by Muslim’s during Ramazan and Un-Islamic advantage enjoyed by Non-Muslim Kaafirs of being able to have women contest at the games.
" So, all we can do is sit back and critique the show." +++++++++++++++++++++++++ The show that is Pakistan!
Four Medals in a population of 180 Mn. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ That wraps up the story of sports in Pakistan.
When the sports bodies of Pakistan are run by military and civil bureaucrats what else can you expect?
I have on multiple occasion on these comment pages of ET pointed out that Pakistan has an obsession for boxing above her weight class and nurturing an outsize military in order to seek military parity with India resulting in the inevitable consequence of entailing Pakistan figuratively “Eating Grass”.
Against the above backdrop the ET editorial on Pakistan’s pathetic performance in winning medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow comes as no surprise. This stark reality is the inevitable outcome of Pakistan’s obsession for boxing above her weight class and nurturing an outsize military in order to seek parity with India leaving little resources for sports infrastructure besides a whole range of other non-military infrastructure in health, education, nutrition etc. Gorging on shiny new eye candy weapon systems, maintaining the Generals, Marshalls and Admirals of the Military in the princely Mughal style they are used to and strutting the world stage as the “Sole Islamic Nuclear Power”, will as former Prime Minister Z.A. Bhutto put it require Pakistan “Eating Grass”. Till such time as Pakistan accepts the immutable reality that she is inferior to India, Pakistan’s civilians will continue to perform below potential. The solution is thus rather straight forward. Pakistan needs to accept that she is India’s inferior. The big question that then remains is will Pakistan make the rational choice and junk the braggadocio of attempting to seek equality with India? Or will it accept the inevitable consequence of misallocating resources in favour of the Military entailing Pakistan’s civilians figuratively “Eating Grass”?.
@Dharma Sena: While i understand Pakistan has done bad, it is important to note that India is no established power house. We are worse off in sports like football, Hockey and also Athletics compared to where we were 30-40 years back.. While we are doing little bit better then Pakistan we have a Long Long way to go when we compare with Chinese, Americans, Russians, Aussies etc..., Australia etc... In summary nothing to Gloat about.
It is time to send Pakistan Election Commission under PML-N guidance to such Games so that Referee Voting is rigged and then Pakistan can win more medals. Pakistan must be for sure by now the experts in doing this vote rigging thing;
Its not India against whom v r competing. V r competing against corruption to start with and then absence of any governance is the next on the list of our miseries.
Using the term “even India” is a delusionally patronizing tone for ET to adopt and flies in the face of reality. India won 15 Gold, 30 Silver and 19 Bronze 19 for a total of 64 medals. Pakistan on the other hand won no Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze for a total of 4 medals. Even on a population adjusted basis India delivered a drubbing to Pakistan.
OR EVEN INDIA???? INDIA is far far far ahead of Pakistan! Check medal tally and know the reality!
Pakistan got 3 medals against India's 64. Too bad.
