Ahmed, who was in his mid-fifties, was also a local religious leader and was considered a 'saint' by his followers and belonged to the Sufi order of Islam, which is reviled by militants.
Police said an improvised explosive device planted on the road exploded as Ahmed's car passed near the village of Maddi, just outside Dera Ismail Khan.
"Faqir Jamshed, his driver and guard were killed in the blast," district police chief Sadiq Baloch told AFP.
Another police official, Tikka Khan, confirmed the incident and the casualties.
Baloch said that Ahmed might have been targeted by militants for being a Sufi saint.
Police reached the site of the blast and cordoned off the area, and a search operation is underway.
Three people have been arrested so far and the Elite Force is taking part in the search operation as well.

what a great loss
I have met the man Faqir Jamshed. Truly a great man coming from a great father and even greater grand father. The person who has done this evil deed must remember that he too shall die. Let me remind him that killing of one muslim is like the killing of the entire mankind ...l truly wonder what it must be to kill a friend of Allah.... May Allah grant his father Sayed Faqir Abdul Hameed his mother and his wife and children sabr in this trying time. Ameen
Even then Mr. Imran Khan will not condemn the TTP. Want to know the reasons, guess.
Faqir Jamshed was a phenomenal leader & the bravest man one could imagine. I have met his family in Kulachi, Dera Ismail Khan. Whoever is responsible for this brutal act shall pay in the world hereafter! He doesn't know WHOM he has killed! If every leader lived as simply aa Faqir Jamshed, this country wouldn't have been in this catastrophic scenario! He was a true spiritual leader & a true Muslim! Not the so called extremist Mulla! May Allah grant SABAR to his mother & his Father, Faqir Abdul Hameed Sarwari Qadri. Aameen
Such explosive device can be planted by by some foreign elements to create panic in the peaceful Azadi March of PTI . After that a blame game will start between Imran and Nawaz .
Blithe@ Some deranged objectivity, that. And why would KPK government kill one of its own? Please enlighten the plebs.
@Someguyinamerica: Why should you publish anti- PML statements ???
Have some objectivity! He was killed in kpk and IK and KPK government is responsible .
Shame on pmln.
Yes I came to comment here cause dawn news wouldn't let me publish anti-pmln comments :)
Not to worry. Taliban will apologize soon. Imran will say it is because of drones.
Why did it happen so close to the Azadi March? Was it to scare PTI ?
I think PML-N's gullu butts might be responsible for this. They have tried all sorts of ways to stop IK but they have failed.
That's friendly fire
