MULTAN:

A seven-year-old boy was allegedly beaten to death by his stepmother on Saturday.

A Basti Malook police spokesman said Muhammad Iqbal, a resident Qadir Pur Maral, had four children from his first wife. He said Muzammil was the youngest.

He said Iqbal’s first wife had died two years ago and he had married Raheela six months after she died.

He said on Friday night, she called some relatives and told them that her husband was out of town and Muzammil was ill.

He said on Saturday, when they went to visit the child, Raheela told them he had died and funeral arrangements were being made.

He said the relatives discovered wounds on the child’s body when they were preparing it for the funeral. He said they got more suspicious when they confronted her and she insisted on burying the child before his father returned.

The spokesman said police was informed by one of the relatives who took the body into custody and sent to Nishtar Hospital for a post mortem examination.

The spokesman said Raheela had been detained at her residence. He said Raheela had not Iqbal informed of his son’s death and he heard the news from a relative.
