Bangladesh Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali hailed the ruling announced on Tuesday by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague as a "victory and a win-win situation for both sides".
The court drew a new maritime border that awarded Bangladesh 19,467 square kilometres (7,516 square miles) of sea area out of a total disputed area of 25,602 square kilometres, the minister told reporters.
"It finally resolves peacefully and in accordance with international law a problem that had hampered the economic development of both states for more than three decades," he said in Dhaka.
The minister said the ruling would enable Bangladesh to push ahead with exploring for gas and other resources in the Bay of Bengal, and also allow its fishing industry to flourish.
India also hailed the decision, saying it paved the way for further economic development between the two countries.
"We believe that the settlement of the maritime boundary will further enhance mutual understanding and goodwill between India and Bangladesh by bringing to closure a long-pending issue," said foreign ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin.
Bangladesh in 2012 resolved a sea border dispute with Myanmar which had been a frequent flashpoint between the two nations.
The maritime disputes had almost dashed Bangladesh's plan to invite foreign companies to explore for hydrocarbons in the resource-rich Bay of Bengal after Myanmar and India objected to some of the sea blocks being offered.
Although Bangladesh's energy ministry later redrew some of the blocks, it only attracted limited interest from foreign firms largely due to the disputes.

@Np: How clever of you. Get the same yardstick for all the countries. Check the India, Pakistan and China economy. Pakistan GDP is 240 billion USD(nominal GDP). India has a GDP of 1.85 trillion USD(nominal GDP). If you look at the population of India 1.24 billion( which is 7 times the population of Pakistan at 180 million) the per capita GDP of both countries Pakistan and India are same. China with a same population of India has a GDP of 9.4 trillion USD, more than 4.5 times the GDP of India. Per capita GDP is about 4 times more than India.

@BlackJack:
you will be surprised your mentioned countries economies are good from pakistan now this time.

@N.Sid: What hegemony you are talking about? and what the smaller nations have lost due to Indian presure? Both BD and SL are buying weapons from China and doing a lot of business with China,,, has India asked them not to buy weapons or do business with china? Has India coerced them into doing anything? Do you think that Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are acting under Indian pressure to not allow anti indian terrorists to use their soil? BD and SL have their own internal problems but they understand the importance of good relations for their countries' progress.
@N.Sid: Poor Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bangladesh are two weak to challenge India. I can assure you that none of these poor people would want to be Pakistanis today - despite your wonderful hegemony-stopping powers. Going for arbitration implies that one is willing to compromise - it is indeed a sign of maturity when dealing with a smaller country that you could have harassed endlessly (you should know, they exited Pakistan when they could suffer the harassment no longer).
@N.Sid, those who anguish at other's success/happiness are doomed to the curse of depression/sorrow for eternity. I believe this statement should reflect the current state of Pakistan.
If you read the story carefully, the issue was resolved peacefully, without any bloodshed, and without India's so called hegemony.
India's hegemony is your mind's devil, first you created the enemy by going out of way (read history from neutral source and not quote from Pakistan studies) and then you complain that India takes tough stance against you. You initiated wars against India (again read neutral sources), got defeated every time and everytime you blamed India for attacking you and made India an existential threat.
@N.Sid: Indian economy is 9 times size of Pakistan and China's is 2.5 times that of India.mstill in your mind, India and Pakistan are equivalent and China is in a different league from India.Wah!!!
@Asad Khan, the comment shows your immaturity and your sick mindset.
So as per you it is better to keep on fighting, keep on loosing precious life, spend precious resources on feeding the army rather then poor and keep buying hardware (read:arms) that is going to be obsolete in 5-10 years and fills the coffers of already rich nations like US/Europe/China.
I would say kudos to India/Bangladesh for resolving this matter without blood-shed. By going to Arbitration they have shown flexibility and maturity in their attitude. Best part is both the countries welcomed the decision given by the court.
@Asad Khan: Agreeing to go for aritrationis a sign of maturity. It has been offered to Pakistan for Sir Creek by India but refused.
@N.Sid: Didnyou read the news? Does it look like Bangladesh gave in to India or that India bullied it?
@Jat: This anguish is because of the fact that Pakistan is the only country in South Asia, who can stop the Indian hegemony in the region, A power to reckon with....not discussing China, she is in a different league. Poor Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bangladesh are two weak to challenge India. Hence they gives in under pressure, and subscribe to India.
@Asad Khan: Its indeed maturity on part of India looking at her size and might vis-a-vis Bangladesh. Can you imagine how china would deal with such dispute with a small country? Going for arbitration itself is a very mature move.
India is closed to signing agreements on land and water issues with Bangladesh but i wont be surprized if India again opts for arbitration route given internal compulsions. hope you understand what i mean by internal compulsions since India is a diverse, pluralist country.
@Jat:
Yup, they are mature enough that they can not resolve the issue themselves and have to go for Arbitration which is last and final choice & above all legally binding.
Nice going Jat.
regards,
India will peacefully resolve all border issues with its neighbours under the leadership of Narendra Modi. PM has a very good foresight to improve relations with all neighbours and he has a mandate to do so.
This is how mature countries behave. But for one black sheep, SAARC could be the world's biggest economic powerhouse.
