Justice Nasirul Mulk was sworn in on Sunday as the 22nd chief justice of Pakistan, ushering in a new era of judicial restraint for the country’s top court.
Justice Mulk, the Supreme Court’s (SC) most senior judge, took over as chief justice after his predecessor Tassaduq Hussain Jillani retired on July 5.
The 63-year old, who took the oath from President Mamnoon Hussain in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his cabinet members, is expected to highlight the top court’s role as a constitutional body in harmony with other state institutions.
The new chief justice is expected to remain at the helm of the apex court till August 16, 2015 according to information posted to the court’s official website.
Justice Mulk hails from Swat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and did his Bar-at-Law from the Inner Temple, London in 1976.
The outgoing chief justice, members of the diplomatic community, and senior government officials also attended the oath-taking ceremony at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
