Police say both men killed in Karachi explosion were terrorists

KARACHI: Police Saturday claimed a major breakthrough in a bombing which took place outside a mosque in Karachi’s Saddar on Friday afternoon, claiming that both men killed in the explosion were terrorists.

Raja Omar Khattab, in-charge Crime Investigation Department’s Counter Terrorism Unit, while talking to The Express Tribune said that “they were not Taliban, they were nationalists”.

However, the investigators failed to establish the terrorists' target.

Two people were killed and two others were wounded in the powerful explosion. The blast took place outside the Jama Masjid Muhajir Makki situated on the city’s busiest street, when two motorcycles collided with each other.

The bomb disposal squad said that the explosive material planted on the motorcylce, weighed four kilogrammes, which exploded due to a mechanism fault or mishandling.

Police officials said that the terrorists who were killed belonged to the nationalist party of Sindh – Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM).

One was identified as Abdul Fateh, father of a three-year-old son, who hails from Nawab Shah and resided here in a city at Paposh Nagar’s Jamhoria Colony.

The second man was identified as Amir Panwar, a resident of Jamshoro.

On the other hand, police have registered a case on behalf of the state against unidentified persons at the Brigade police station of District East in conjuction with section 7 of the anti-terrorism act and explosive act. Further investigations have been initiated.
