In the protest held at People’s Colony, members of the children parliament and a large number of locals carried placards and chanted slogans against the torture of the maid. “We are calling for the end of child labour, especially under the guise of ‘housework’ by so-called rich and educated families,” said CPP member Faiza Sultan, adding that the CPP condemned all forms of child labour whether it be in factories or in peoples homes.
The participants shouted slogans against the torture of a 10-year-old housemaid by her employers in Multan and demanded that the local government register all children being forced to work in the district.
“We need to know how many children are being manipulated and they need to be put in school. This is the government’s responsibility,” CPP member Ejaz Haroon said, adding that the organisation would not accept anything less than the government banning child labour.
After the protest, a meeting of the regional assembly was held. Children aged between 12 and 17 from Faisalabad, Sialkot and Toba Tek Singh also participated in the meeting and shared their experiences of working at a very young age. The session was aimed at presenting recommendations to educate people about child labour. The members talked about curbing child labour and upholding children’s rights.
