KARACHI: A ‘rescue vehicles system’ should be introduced to help remove vehicles that break down during rains from the roads, said commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui during a meeting on Tuesday.

According to a press release, the meeting was convened on the directive of Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah.  The chief minister had ordered all departments to review the arrangements made to handle the situation before, during and after the monsoon rains.

The proposed rescue vehicles system will not only assist citizens but will also help ease out the traffic flow, said the traffic DIG. He said that people leave their vehicles in the middle of the roads when they break down, which affects the traffic flow adversely. Moreover, he said that the traffic police have devised a plan for alternate routes during the monsoon rains.

Talking about the monsoon preparations, Siddiqui said that rescue teams should include mechanical technicians who can provide immediate relief to motorists in case their vehicles break down. The commissioner said that special attention should be paid on cleaning the drainage system and removing encroachments. He added that leases or no-objection certificates (NOC) should not be issued to encroachments set up on the sewers. He called for the revocation of any existing leases or NOCs.

The Sindh Building Control Authority should issue notices to the inhabitants of all the decaying buildings in the city as a safety measure, said Siddiqui. The meeting concluded that all the departments have finalised their preparations and contingency plans for the monsoon rains.

Additional commissioner Muhammad Aslam Khoso, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) senior director municipal services Masood Alam, media commissioner director Muhammad Shabih Siddiqui, and officers of the Pakistan Navy, KMC and Karachi Water and Sewerage Board attended the meeting.
