Outraged at the perceived disloyalty of his former friend and appointee, the Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Beckett, a bitter King Henry II supposedly cried, “Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest?” Four of his knights obliged, hacking Beckett to death on Dec 29, 1170 in the cathedral in Canterbury. While certainly no Thomas Beckett, Tahirul Qadri was once close to the Sharifs, being sponsored by them. They — along with quite a few others — now view the Pakistan Awami Tehreek leader as quite ‘mad’ rather than ‘meddlesome’. There is remarkable similarity with Henry’s knights and the more-loyal-than-the-king Punjab police opening fire at point blank range in Model Town, Lahore on Jan 17, 2014, killing eight of Qadri’s followers outright (three died later) including two women, one of them pregnant.
Shahbaz Sharif claims ‘out of the loop’ innocence about the murder and mayhem let loose by his autocratic governance structure notwithstanding, the cover-up for the chief minister of Punjab will take some doing. Known PML-N activist Gullu Butt was seen live on TV running amok, smashing dozens of cars while the police looked on smilingly, even embracing him publicly like the favourite son he is. Not exactly Jallianwala Bagh as some claim but remember the Tunisian cart vendor Mohammad Bouazizi sparking the Arab Spring with his death on January 4, 2011. Model Town and Gullu Butt will not disappear, those wanting to chak de phatte” Sharif Inc will exploit this to the hilt.
Some PPP leaders in Punjab are inclined to disobey Zardari and take the Sharifs on. His ‘selection and maintenance of aim’ (Clausewitz’ first principle of war) fixated on making money, Zardari does not want any chak de sorts to rock the boat.
Intent upon bringing the ‘House of Pakistan’ down, the mixed bag of our ill-wishers want to defang us of our nuclear assets. Offsetting the overwhelming numerical advantage of conventional threats this is vital for us. Those wanting to Balkanise Pakistan (short of war) first target emasculating ISI’s effectiveness, that being our first line of defence. Some in politics and the media within Pakistan are ganging up with our foreign detractors out of crass motivated interest.
Less said about PML-N’s tacit support for the obnoxious media tirade and innuendos against the army and the ISI the better. Read between the lines the Army Chief’s confidence about being ‘prepared to fight the entire spectrum of threats pertaining to national security’ conveying marked frustration among the rank and file with the politicians’ attempting to humble their former chief with the ongoing treason case (and its consequent adverse media coverage). The widely held public perception, the real Sharif agenda is to cut the army down to size. Things could get worse, Musharraf’s counsel opened a Pandora’s box by resorting to chess’ ‘Sicilian Defence’, combative in nature it shuns equality for advantage. Qadri may be their creation, politically the Sharifs are a creation of the khakis. Skeletons will be dragged out of the cupboard!
The Sharifs have a lot going for them. China is pouring in money in multiple projects, Russia is seeing us for the first time through Chinese eyes and there could be possible lessening of tensions with India. While still in the doldrums, the economy is picking up. With creditable book-building by a first class privatisation team led by Zubair Omer, foreign money buying Pakistani public assets at a good price is a major success. Pick an honest man with capability and he will give you results, very much like Shujaat Azeem has started to deliver for PIA.
With the vacuum created by US troops pulling out of Afghanistan, we will remain under pressure. Syria, Iraq, Libya, etc are in a mess. One can only guess what will happen to the Afghan security forces post-2014? Despite our problems and US reservations, the Pakistan Army remains the best bet in the region.
Islamabad’s D-Chowk may not be Tahrir Square but any incident similar to the Model Town excess and all bets are off in this summer’s heat. If the Sharifs remain hell-bent creating problems for themselves politically, matters may well spill out of control in the streets. Public perceptions notwithstanding, the army will not use that as an excuse to throw the Sharifs out. When (and if) the people decide enough is enough, the army may simply stand by and not bail them out.
Letting Musharraf fly off into oblivion and restraining Pervez Rashid from taking them down the road to perdition, the Sharifs must control their recurring suicidal urge for ‘chak de patte’, bringing their own house down.

@shar: The majority of people voted for the PML N for one reason alone: They want to see Pakistan develop ecocnomically. This is exactly what is happening with the new administration and it has been only a year. Look at all the projects. Imran Khan cannot control KPK so instead he wants to divert attention and play the spoiler which doesn't fool anyone.
Pmnl social media out in force insipid at best non compos mentis, truth sharifs have 1 agenda and that is to enrich themselves further and weaken institutions so there is no accountability zardari is on board with this thesis, there biggest fear is not khakis has pmnl like to portray but Imran khan who they cannot pacify they are at a loss as they do not understand how to deal with a man who has no price,so they are doomed caught between a rock and a hard place!
@Abid P. Khan: The funniest comment is the author trying to provoke the army by implying they are upset about the treatment of Musharraf. Everyone I know in the military couldn't care less about him. They see Musharraf as an embarrassment and yesterday's man who doesn't know when to shut up. His failed decade of military rule tarnished the proud Pakistani military who was rehabilitated by Kayani. Kayani and now Raheel Sharif are real professionals who understand the role of the army is not to dirty itself in politics like Musharraf.
@Malveros: "Ikram Sehgal please pack your bags and go back to India where u come from. This is a govt of the people and if u don’t like it so be it. U are purely a Musharraf sympathizer....."
What an intelligent comment! No one can beat that.
The author still needs to master the fine art of giving veiled threats. This is a crude threat-laden write up. Either we the military continue to call the shots or we will take down everyone with us, is what he is saying in a nutshell
Ikram Sehgal please pack your bags and go back to India where u come from. This is a govt of the people and if u don't like it so be it. U are purely a Musharraf sympathizer. Stop trying to create divisions between the govt and army. We have enough pseudo analysts like u.
Army has been at the helm of affairs and brought the country to this woeful state. Tragedy of Nawaz Sharif is that he wants to wrest the driving seat from army and establish government and this is not acceptable. Pakistan is destined to remain adrift unless army learn to stick to its constitutional role, sign of which are nowhere.
Thanks for clearly explaining the term chak de phatte. Pakistan army is trying to take control of the situation in the frontier areas. The Army took no action when Uncle Sam was prodding them. No one will be surprised be if Afghan forces run foolishly leaving arms and ammunition (even some Arabs are laughing about it) in Iraq. Afghans have rareky fought a pitched battle. My bet is the US will leave a substantial contingent in Afghanistan - after all the expenses and sacrifices made by the US soldiers and taxapyers
In a nut shell the analysis suggests that Sharif wants to bring the army down and army wants to bring Sharif down and brought in Quadri to intimidate Sharif. So stay off of army and nukes because army is the savior of PAK political crisis, so don't embarrass the army by punishing Musharraf in treason trial. Otherwise, the money coming in (to the politicians included) will be lost and the army will do Chak de phatte.
PAK needs to be clear whether they want army to be under civilian rule of the PAK politics or they want politicians and politics to be under the army wishes. Otherwise, the accompanying opinion on "Extraordinary Pakistanis" becomes meaningless.
The Quadri drama is certainly army making, at least it seems that way, since the same drama unfolded in PPP rule as well.
This is a surface analysis which lacks logic.Story is simple. Notion of bad and good taliban is false but for good khakis and bad khakis. This is all about greed Bad guys eying on hundreds of key posts which their predecessors had enjoyed during dictatorship. They know they( predecessors) didn't earn it plain but through hard work of leg puling. They fear it will be almost impossible if NS succeeds in setting economy on solid basis. They fear their narrative of-corrupt politician (reason for army coup) will prove wrong.NS magical economic performance only in one year has taken their sleep hence they have to act in haste:How ugly.. Hope Rahil Sharif will route them out for the future of Pakistan.Clean army from black sheep. Bogey of civil military rift is therefore a plain non sense.

Pakistan has a long history of such cases. Bhutto brough Zia Ul Haq out of turn and got hanged by the same person. Sharrif brought Musarraf and got kicked out of country by the same man. Bhutto too was brought by Ayub. It was Bhutto who undermined Ayub the most. I suppose this will continue till real democracy takes deeper roots.
This is vintage stuff. Haven't read Mr Ikram Seghal for many years. He used to be a staunch supporter and advocate of using non-state actors against India. Interesting to learn his current thoughts on guerilla warfare.
