The Pakistan Squash Federation Secretary Aamir Nawaz believes that the national eight-member squad that is leaving to compete in the 2014 Asian Team Championship on Monday can pull off upsets in Hong Kong.
Nawaz said that the men’s and women’s teams have been preparing for the event where they will be accompanied by coach Jamshed Gul and manager Rana Tariq.
Pakistan are fielding Farhan Mehboob, Nasir Iqbal, Farhan Zaman and Danish Atlas in the men’s event, where they are seeded second to India. The women’s team will feature Maria Toorpakai Wazir, Muqadas Ashraf, Riffat Khan and Samar Anjum.
“We’ve tried to provide ample exposure to both teams,” Nawaz told The Express Tribune. “It’s a new beginning for the women’s team. Except for Maria, the other female players do not possess international exposure. But now we’ve planned to send them to events abroad regularly.”
Meanwhile, Nawaz opined that Pakistan will face tough competition from Malaysia, India, Hong Kong and Kuwait.
“As far as the team is concerned, we have Iqbal as our top player, and Mehboob has the potential to create upsets in the tournament.”
The Asian Championship will begin from June 11.
