WASHINGTON: Defending champions Spain leave for Brazil optimistic about their chances of a repeat triumph and undaunted by Friday’s opening game against the Netherlands in a rematch of the 2010 World Cup final.

“We don’t have any fear; but we do have respect,” said Spain manager Vicente del Bosque. “They are runners-up from the last World Cup, so we have full respect for Holland.

“We’re very optimistic after our training and two friendly matches,” del Bosque said. “We are meeting our expectations. We are confident heading into the World Cup.”

In the last friendly on Saturday, David Villa, Spain’s all-time goals leader, lifted his total to 58 with two goals to give his side a 2-0 win over El Salvador.

Meanwhile, England manager Roy Hodgson breathed a sigh of relief after his team emerged unscathed from a bruising goalless draw with Honduras on Saturday.

A match interrupted by a lightning storm also saw plenty of sparks on the pitch with a number of full-blooded challenges. England created several openings but failed to take advantage, with Daniel Sturridge the main culprit.

Lukaku to rest for
several days

Belgium forward Romelu Lukaku will need to rest for several days after injuring his ankle in Saturday’s World Cup warm-up against Tunisia, said his coach Marc Wilmots.

The Chelsea forward, who spent last season on loan at Everton, came on in the 61st minute of the 1-0 victory in Brussels but limped off just before full-time.

“He’s in pain but the doctors don’t think it’s too serious, at least at first glance,” Wilmots was quoted as saying in Belgian press on Sunday.

“Hopefully he just needs three or four days to recover.”
