Government should do whatever it can to make it binding upon industrialists to dispose of wastewater carefully.
KARACHI: Through this letter in your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of authorities concerned towards the serious problem of water pollution in Karachi. We rely on clean water to survive, yet right now we are heading towards a water crisis because of water pollution. Water pollution has affected the lives of many people and animals.
The contamination of water occurs due to the disposal of garbage, chemical leaks or industrial waste in seas, lakes or rivers. The main cause of water pollution is plastic bags as plastic does not decompose in water and causes toxicity for long periods of time. In Karachi, it is apparent that all the garbage and industrial waste is thrown into the sea, which threatens marine life. Swimming in and drinking contaminated water can cause skin rashes and severe stomach problems. Moreover, the release of sewage water into the sea causes the temperature of the water to rise, which is harming the ecosystem of our planet.
Water pollution can also cause flooding due to the accumulation of solid waste and soil erosion in streams and rivers. Water pollution can be prevented if sewage water is treated before dumping and the use of plastic bags is prohibited. Industries should find appropriate ways to treat chemical waste to limit the pollution caused by dumping untreated waste into the sea.
Lastly, our government should do whatever it can to make it binding upon industrialists to dispose of wastewater carefully.
