PESHAWAR: Former MPA Atiqur Rehman of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has been released from jail, Express News reported on Saturday.

Atiqur Rehman was arrested for alleged involvement in the murder case of MPA Farid Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

In a special anti-terrorism court (ATC) set up in Peshawar Central Jail, Judge Asif Imam released Atiqur Rehman along with three others arrested with him on the basis of lack of evidence.

Farid’s lawyer told Express News that they will file an appeal in the Peshawar High Court as they were not satisfied with the decision.

Farid  had won the PK-42 (Hangu-I) seat in the May 11 elections as an independent candidate beating his closest rival Atiqur Rehman. He then joined PTI but soon after was shot dead in Hangu on June 3 2013.

The deceased MPA’s brother Shamsur Rehman had filed an FIR at Hangu police station accusing JUI-F’s Atiq, his brother Shafiqur Rehman and uncle Noor Rehman of being responsible for Farid’s murder.
