LAHORE:

The Lahore High Court on Thursday issued a show-cause notice to the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) chief for not supplying electricity to Okara jail and directed him to submit his response in person.

Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan issued the order on a petition for improving conditions of prisons. A committee set up by the court submitted its report during the hearing.

The report said that construction of new jails in five districts of the province had been completed. However, construction of a new jail in Pakpattan was delayed due to shortage of funds while Okara jail was not being supplied electricity, causing problems for the prisoners and the jail staff. The judge summoned the Lesco chief on the next hearing. He said strict action would be taken if new jails were not constructed by July 1.
