Aggrieved staffers: Public employees demand promotions
PESHAWAR:
Hundreds of technical and non-technical staff of various government departments assembled at Bacha Khan Chowk on Tuesday to protest and later staged a sit-in outside the provincial assembly. The protesters chanted slogans against the provincial government for ‘discrimination’ in the promotion of employees. The protest led to severe traffic jams as vehicles trying to enter the city were diverted from Sher Shah Suri Road to Dabgari Road. The protesters included workers of the municipal corporation, irrigation and water management department, members of the local government employees federation, people’s labour bureau and the national labour federation. President of the employees union, Malik Naveed, said the government should give better benefits to all technical and non-technical staff of basic pay scale-16 and below. PTI MPA Arif Yousaf assured the union leaders that he would arrange a meeting for them with the chief minister today (Wednesday).
