The head of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on Sunday called for the trial of a powerful troika comprising Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N), former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and Mir Shakilur Rehman for alleged “rigging” and “stealing the public mandate”.
“If the troika is not punished for their wrongdoings, the ideal of transparent elections will never be realised,” he told a huge public meeting at Dhobi Ghatt.
Imran announced that the PTI ‘tsunami’ would continue to struggle for the trial of “election fixers” and formation of an independent and impartial election commission for transparent polls in the country.
“A free, fair and transparent system of elections is a prerequisite for the promotion of democracy and without it an electoral exercise would be nothing but a farce,” he said.
Imran claimed that the entire country had lost trust and confidence in the Election Commission of Pakistan and it should be reconstituted so that all forms of rigging could be dismantled in future.
“The May 11 general elections were manipulated and the election commission failed to check all such manipulation and malpractices,” he said.
He said he demanded verification of ballots in four constituencies as he knew that everything would become crystal clear if verification was carried out in these constituencies.
Visibly happy over the huge turnout at the public meeting, the PTI chief spoke for almost 35 minutes and announced that the next public meeting would be held at Sialkot on June 7, adding that the mass movement would continue until his targets were achieved.
He said that though the PML-N had ruled Punjab five times and the centre three times, it had not brought any improvement in the life of the ordinary people.
“The price of electricity has been doubled in one year and is regularly going up. Circular debt has again risen to Rs300 billion. What has become of your promise to bring improvements and eliminate load-shedding?” asked Imran.
He said the PML-N leadership had promised not to take foreign loans or accept handouts. “But after coming into power, it has broken all records in terms of acquiring foreign loans and have acquired a loan of 50 billion dollars against 60 billion dollars in 64 years,” he added.
Criticising Nawaz Sharif, he said he was living like a king, was spending Rs400 million on Raiwind’s security and purchased two BMW cars costing Rs240 million.
“How can such rulers resolve the public problems? They are enjoying their lives with the hard-earned money of the public, who are deprived of all basic amenities”.
PTI central leader Javed Hashmi said his party had launched a mass movement for securing the rights of the youth, the deprived and oppressed classes and ensuring the rule of law, equity and justice.
“We waited for a whole year with patience and knocked at all doors for justice but our demands were ignored,” he said, adding that the party was left with no option but to directly take verdict of the public.
PTI’s Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that those who were claiming that the party’s public meetings would derail the democracy were mistaken. “I tell the youth that there is no danger of democracy due to the PTI public contact movements; rather it will strengthen due to these rallies,” he said.
Addressing the public meeting, Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed predicted that the government was likely to fall before Eidul Azha.
“I predict there will be a Qurbani (sacrifice) of this government before the Eid-e-Qurban”, Sheikh Rasheed said.

@jonaid: The problem is short term gains to win votes vs long term strategy. People see road built think this is development but don't see a generation getting nurtured and nourished as a result of free education as a development. Like I said, people in Punjab are made to believe that free laptops means modernisation instead of enabling to them to be able to earn a laptop. This is a typical king mentality where slaves are given small gifts so they think master look after their slaves. Its a pity.
@Humayun: Yes, and file the review petition in the court of Justice Jawad S. Khawaja.
@Junaid: Is development only building the roads like SS doing?? Education, Justice, health progress is not the development for you? Why federal govt. not releasing the money of KPK.
@Junaid: Which parliament. Had MNS take this parliament serious?
@Junaid: I speak on behalf of a small town in rural Peshawar. Below are the policies so far implemented by KPK Govt. 1) Free education for uptill 10th grade. 2) Scholarships for brilliant students. 3) Free education for disabled. 4) New girls colleges to promote female literacy rate along with free education uptill Bachelors. 5) Government officers are more active than before. The issue of bribing Govt officers has reduced. 6) Mobile courts. 7) Online FIR (First Information Report)
Shortcomings 1) KP Govt is slow in implementing their policies. They claimed top level corruption will be vanished. (Corruption is reduced but not vanished) 2) Local bodies are still pending apart from IK's claims to hold LB in 90 days. 3) KP can fulfil the electricity demands of the whole country. IK should take the initiative and bring investors to build small dams.
@Junaid: IK has raised this issue since May 12 but nothing concrete has been done to address the core issue of rigging. Two options, shut up and move on OR do what he is doing now. First option will only strengthen the MNS and his cronies going into next election which is worst so the best option is force these thieves into making changes and brining reforms, reconstituting ECP etc etc etc. Do you seriously want a musical chair of PMLN and PPP taking turns and drown this country once and for all or do you want things to change, to have your vote counted?
IK is an elected member of the government. The parliament is the proper avenue to raise his voice and formulate a regulation. Going to the streets doesn't suit a respectable and honorary member of the parliament.
@JB I've been to KPK myself several times and have a lot of friends and relatives in that province. Not even a single road had been constructed in the last 1 year. The only thing good is the mobilization of courts. Apart from that nothing has been done as far as development is concerned. Why doesn't IK use the "magic wand" he claims he has in KPK through which he claims he and his party can make this country perfect and remove all ills like corruption, unemployment etc? Secondly, i said that the literacy rate has gone "further down". Atleast IK could have maintained the figures instead of deteriorating them.
Interesting to see he is coming so hard against CJ Iftikhar - Why does he not go for review petition ?
Please make a jalsa in gujrat. people in faislabad got no loadshedding. They will also get a new power plant and water purification plant. These jalsas make pmln act. @junaid: please visit kpk and ask citizens about difference. I've been there 3 times this year and can see and feel change. Citizens have more faith with the provincial government now.
@Junaid IK has been talking and protesting about the election results and their rigging for the last year! And do you actually believe that literacy rate can be improved in one year? Wow! Even the most of developed countries took decades for that. Can a child learn to read and write and become 'literate' in one year??
Reduction in load shedding prior to the rallies, TV commercial attempting to highlight their achievements, free concert on the same day in the same city, desperate statements by federal ministers and bla bla bla... PLMN surely feeling the pinch.
@zafar: Why? Please share the reasons. If you know the reasons, please demand asap yourself. MNS cant on your behalf, he's a businessman. He'll throw rocks at you and you'd pick hem up as if they are gold bites.
I'd have a lot more respect for IK if he had the moral courage to stand by his remarks when he went to Supreme court over the ex-CJ. To come out now and demanding trial for ex-CJ is a cheap stunt.
I was against the present move of IK but after hearing yesterday's speech I am convinced. IK keep the burning flame alive as you are the last hope.
I think its time IK starts making some policies rather than carrying out meaningless "dharnas". I totally regret voting for PTI and voting for a party which has no political mandate and one specific stance. Can anyone please highlight one developmental project IK has initiated in KPK?
I wonder why it took a year for Mr. Imran Khan to declare that the elections were rigged. And if they were rigged why did he formulate a government in KPK in the first place? IK keeps highlighting that nothing has changed in the past 1 year. Well he had a government in KPK then why didn't he bring any change there? Alif Ailaan statistics show that literacy rate of KPK has gone further down. I think its time IK starts making some policies rather than carrying out meaningless "dharnas". I totally regret voting for PTI and voting for a party which has no political mandate and one specific stance.
THE ONLY politician in Pakistan talking about electoral reforms, something our 'free' media should have taken up months and months ago.
pl 1st demand trial of ex-troika ik ,qadri snd mush.
Is this first troika which has stolen elections? Imran should show some courage and demand trial of his mentors too.
@PeaceMonger: Define brink?
@Lyari: Its a desparate situation dude ... only if you could see and understand.
@Stop this: Move on to what? Expect another farce 4 years from now? You guys don't use your heads do you?
He is taking Pakistan to the brink. Sometimes there might be no coming back. There is something seriously wrong with IK's thinking.
This guy is insane and desperate. Has he tabled any significant bills in the parliament. Why doesn't he table elector reform bill?
InshaAllah Pakistani public will win ... Good luck PTI.
Doesn't Imran know that Iftikhar Chudhary was busy in issues of "national importance" like Ateeqa Odho's wine bottle and memo gate
if nothing else, Imran khan provides a great deal of irritation to established and corrupt leaders in our country. he forces the illiterate and educate alike to think about what the people in power are doing. before imran, there was no check and balance on sharifs and bhuttos each stealing with both hands until the army put an end to the free-for-all.
now, he must also do whatever his party can to improve KPK.
The revolt is now in the making and one suspects with the support of the army brass,; his Indian visit to celebrate the crowning of Hindutwa leader will cause the impeachment of the Hon. Prime Minister!!
Rex Minor
Move on.
IK move forward. We are with u.
Detailed, concise and to the point address, all proven with facts and figures. Well done Imran Khan, PTI and Faisalabad for arranging such gathering. The ciruclar debt has again risen to 300 Bn causing massive power outages. Can any PMLN supporter tell me where did that 500B money go and why such ayyashi on buting new BMW's?
IK-we are with you all the way.
