LAHORE:

An additional district and sessions judge sought comments from the Lower Mall and Misri Shah SHOs in two petitions seeking the registration of cases against five traffic wardens allegedly involved in beating up citizens.

Petitioner Hafiz Ali said that on May 17 he was in the Civil Lines when traffic warden Mukarram Shabbir stopped him and demanded his motorcycle’s registration documents. Ali said he produced all the necessary documents but was still issued a traffic ticket.

When he asked why he was issued a ticket, the warden allegedly took him to Bhatti Gate. Ali said that Shabbir had violated the rules as the warden was on duty at Lower Mall. He said Mukarram Shabbir and another warden, Naeem Malik, severely beat him up at the police station.

Another petitioner, Jahangir Munir, said his motorcycle was parked at a mechanic’s workshop when traffic warden Muhammad Naveed directed him to move his motorcycle.

Munir responded that he could not as the mechanic had removed parts of his motorcycle for repair. Munir alleged that the traffic warden used derogatory language against him and then started to beat him.

He said traffic wardens Muzmal Munir and Muhammad Wahab later arrived there and also beat him. The petitioners asked the courts to direct the respondents SHOs to register cases against the traffic wardens for beating them.
