While the action sequences and general acting are good, the number of villains and limited character development make following the plot a bit of a mental exercise. Why does Electro (Jamie Foxx) conveniently go from harmless to evil? How does his transformation from human to super-villain work? Why are there three villains stuffed in the same movie when the same idea failed miserably in Spider-Man 3 that featured Spider-Man’s most captivating rival, Venom? Without clear connections and overlapping story elements, director Marc Webb leaves the movie spinning without any focus.
Granted that as a comic book character Electro is no Venom, but considering how good the hero behind the makeup and computer-generated imagery is, the limited character development appears to be a waste of talent on the writers’ part. Perhaps the screen time allotted to Harry Osborne played by Dane DeHaan could have been better spent showing Electro’s slide to evil, making the transformation more believable. The same applies to Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, who will probably make an appearance in sequels as a more prominent character.
The Peter Parker-Gwen Stacy storyline is well done and comes as a respite from the fight scenes, but even here, a chance to move Spider-Man into a more ‘human’ hero with real-world emotions and weaknesses is wasted. Anyone familiar with the ’70’s Spider-Man storyline will be stunned when they come across the twist in the storyline after which Peter’s teenage angst and some of his childish behaviour is largely brushed aside as opposed to in the comic book storyline.
The amount of green screen involved in the action scenes also alienates the older viewer. Many superhero movies have avoided this by having a few action sequences with the hero out of costume, including the previous Spider-Man installments, but in this movie’s defense, that becomes difficult when the villain is a glowing electrical construct.
Spider-Man is the unofficial mascot of Marvel Comics, which makes it appropriate to compare it with DC Comic’s Superman, another financially successful movie that left most fans polarised. But where Superman won outright was setting a platform for character development in future movies. The most recent Marvel Comics movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier was also a phenomenal success because of the mix of comic book canon and original writing, leaving even loyal readers gasping in some scenes. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, however, there are few, if any moments of awe.
This might also be because Spider-Man (along with the X-Men) is not part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe in which The Avengers and movies featuring the superhero team members all star. Unfortunately the licensing issues resulted in the comic book storylines losing their edge which cost the movie in the form of lost fans.

The movie is clearly a plot of the studio to make bucks off the people who foolishly flood the theaters ..... every movie now has a million sequels - each sequel weakening the plot with pathetic scripts and over exaggerated CGI.... Transformers, X Men and Captain America etc .. If not going for sequels ... endless remakes are done .. Hollywood has lost its creativity and charm ...
Now, read my review: This is the best Spider-Man movie since Raimi's SM2 and a great super hero film. A must watch!
This is one of the worst movie reviews I've read. How was this published?
Surprised over the review. I thought the movie was really good. And in reality there were basically 2 villains instead of 3. Rhino was just a preview of things to come in the rumored Sinister Six movie.
Andrew Garfield as Spidey is very similar to how he is in comics and cartoon series. I think he has done a great job portraying the role of the web spinner. I agree that they could have used just 2 villains instead of 3. But it was a treat to watch spider man battle against all of them..specially the last fight with electreo. I personally found this movie even better than the 1st part.
My last argument that this movie was a flop: Spiderman 3 got a better score on Rotten Tomatoes.. And that is a compilation of multiple critics' reviews
Ok 1st off I know not everyone will agree or like the same thing and that's ok but the fact is overall this was a great movie. As someone who didn't even watch the 1st one till two days ago cause I never intended too for the fact that didn't the one with Toby Mcguire not been out that long to reboot it which I understand why they did but I didn't think they could top that version. Now with that said after hearing all the fuss of how amazing this spiderman movie is I gave in to try how it is and as a previous critic I admit I was wrong in so many ways! I think this is not only great but better than the Toby Mcguire version. I like that version and like Toby as spiderman then but this version is even better. Andrew gar field is outstanding as spiderman I don't know if anyone seen any of the anime or cartoon spiderman shows but he is just like him for the most part. I don't mind him playing spiderman/Peter Parker and emma stone was fantastic as Gwen it just sucks she well you know or you will find out. And people complaining about Peter and Harry story not being really develop who cares we know the story and they pretty much ran that hard in the other versions so we didn't need to take all the time for that.the action and images are better than the other versions and makes it exciting. There's lots of good about wi th some bad but unlike some people I'm not trying to be negative or hate so take it or leave it but this is a amazing movie
I like Spider-Man, just not this one. The plot was good, the setting was good, the imagery was good. To open the movie with a villain ramming and running over cars, which would cause death and destruction to their drivers, Our "Hero" cracks jokes and does very little to actually stop the vehicle. Aquick webbing of the driver would have saved lives. However the director thought we needed EXCESSIVE comic relief. The COMIC relief never stops. The body language of the "Hero" is just goofy. I will never get the image of the "Hero" walking around out of my mind. When he does all I can see is a CLOWN walking around in swim fins. Another point to be made is how to continuously make a kiss shared by a couple, that is so in love, look awkward. They are a couple in REAL LIFE, they know how to kiss. By the end of the movie I just wanted him to go away and villainy to win. I am sad for Stan Lee and what Sony has done. Be Strong Stan Lee, someone will save the image of Spider-Man and make him a hero again.
I agree with this review. There were far too many subplots, Peter and Harry's relationship wasn't developed properly, and they didn't give much believable information of Max's transition from a sweet guy to a super-villain. They didn't really focus on a single character. It seems similar to Spider-Man 3 in that sense.
@chanza: Almost... But I forced myself through it
I saw the movie and this review is spot on. It was a ridiculous movie with only a couple memorable moments. Sony has no idea what they are doing. They just want to sell tickets by slapping the Spiderman title onto the movie. Andrew Garfield isn't even Peter Parker in these reboots. I'm disgusted that Sony thinks they can pawn this character off as a hipster cool guy. They are just trying to attract a young audience and they are making a mockery of an iconic character while doing it.
They had a good thing going when they gave Sam Raimi complete creative control. They took that away from him with the third installment and that's why it was a flop.
The movie is captures perfectly what a superhero movie needed! It's is a great work.
This review is bogus. Don't even think he saw the movie lmao!
All wrong
"After the positive response to The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, expectations were high from the sequel"
As soon as I read that, I had no interest in reading the rest of the article because I can tell that it is an opinion-based article.
Amazing Spider-man did not receive positive reviews, it received mixed reviews just like the second one.
This was a horrible review.
I agree with chanza, this review is bogus.
Sorry but were you sleeping through out the movie?
