The well-wishers of Boko Haram, Nigeria’s most vicious career killers, say they are ‘the Holy Quran walking the Earth.’ To anyone with the simplest idea of Islam, this is abuse.
It was sick-hearted men that kidnapped hundreds of girls last month, and it was a state-in-collapse that allowed it to happen. They attacked a secondary school in Chibok, where the girls were preparing for final exams and took them away in trucks. “I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market,” warbles Boko Haram boss Abubakr Shekau, eyes rolling in and out. The video address is ugly and unfocused, with more than one observer pointing to drugs.
The girls themselves may have been divvied into smaller groups, as human shields against reprisals. Some may have already ended up in Chad. The president has declared emergency, but the state is slow to act, and then arbitrary in its action — peppering hard offensives against Boko Haram over long lapses and human rights abuses.
The boys behind Boko Haram, and many are boys, are the latest strain of terror to arrogate religion to the evil they do. As yet, they’ve proven hardier and bloodier than any of Nigeria’s other rebel concerns. They kill students and teachers, bomb buses and barracks, break open prisons and use child soldiers as young as 12. This is as bad as it gets.
The world feels horror. But beyond the calls for solidarity, beyond the promises of foreign assistance, there is a damning indictment. Not Nigeria’s, the press has already seen to that — Pakistan’s.
Pakistan has nothing to do with the madmen taking over Nigeria’s Borno State where Boko Haram feeds on state’s breakdown. Nor are the mass abductions about us; they’re about Nigeria, and how best to get those girls back. History too is witness to a long line of maniacs that perverted Muslim ideas in Muslim states — from the Khwarij in the seventh century to Syria’s ISIS today.
But it’s a massive wakeup call for Pakistanis, a kick in the teeth that shows us what happens when — the political scientists tell us — the state stops safeguarding the social contract, and loses its monopoly over violence too. Seen through another prism, on another continent, in another language, Abubakr Shekau is our moral failure waiting to happen. It’s best we act before it does.
Because we’ve heard this story before. A terrorist group runs rampage with a portfolio that ranges from blowing up schools to shooting up police stations. It specialises in urban bombings that kill scores of civilians, but is also known for wild attacks on government buildings and army headquarters.
And there’s a method to the madness. It generates funds by extorting businesses, robbing banks and kidnapping the rich. It has a vile sectarian plan, fulfilled by storming churches and culling minorities. It preys on poverty in the north, where uneducated, unmotivated men and boys are recruits, and where the state is out of its depth.
The end goal is overthrowing the state, but the initial goal — forbidding voting and learning — takes care of fundamental rights anyway.
Pakistan’s plethora of Boko Harams has done all this and more. They have shredded our churches with ball bearings, they have ethnically cleansed our Hazaras, they have attacked political rallies and military convoys and the Quaid’s house in Ziarat. There’s more than a few of them, with agendas ranging from ethnic to sectarian, from local rackets to international terror. And the state isn’t getting it.
We know the solution. It’s been presented to us a dozen times over the past nine years, by wailing witnesses, by corps commanders, by these pages in fact. Stop the terror in the north west, drain the swamp of sectarianism in southern Punjab, provide a stake to the Pakistanis in chronic poverty in both places, cut the obviously foreign funding, try an ethos that won’t encourage textual literalism — that teaches children to think. Try and fail, if nothing else.
Because the bombs have started going off again, this time in our football stadiums.
But it’s hard to concentrate when Tahirul Qadri’s making a comeback, our own adorable Wizard of Oz. Then there’s D Chowk. There’s 3G and 4G. There’s that obscene Twitter fight between Abid Sher Ali and Nabil Gabol. There’s endless copy to file on the ‘civil-military imbalance’. There might be a new Modi to the right and a new Ghani to the left.
There’s enough — in short — to talk about, even with the sound of death in the distance. Of men that shoot churchgoers at point-blank range, that assault schoolgirls, that push and push the state to the brink and the citizen to desperation. And it’s not coming from Nigeria.
We’ve been reading that same quote from Burke in these pages again and again and again, with each act and each blast: that for evil to win, the good men should do nothing. Since we’ve run out of good men, it would be best to look beyond Burke.
“May the forces of evil,” said George Carlin, “become confused on the way to your house.” As far as hopes go, that’s as basic as it gets — but they will come for us. They have sickness in their hearts.

Raj(USA),
This authors views or of others similar kind correlate with that of yours is because he is the the pure specimen from the land of victims as you are from the land of preadators and it is the scepticism and cynicism which unites you. Those who are the architects of the Tugen-terror are not very different than those who are terrorising with actions.

@Sialkot wala Don`t tell me that Muslims practically don't have cast system & divisions, however if you impose your ignorance about truth than i will be highly oblige to post so many Links & references of Muslim matrimonials from Pakistan, categorized on cast system & discrimination. And please don't tell me that Islam does not permits cast system if so than neither do Hindu Santana religion.
@powvow: Well,..according to your twisted logic,..you just declared the Tea Party [in US] and majority of the Republican Party [in US] lawmakers as addicts and in rehab. Because they do not believe in Global Warming. They think it's cooked up by scientists, with some sinister motive. Ah,..but people like you don't believe in evolution either.....more a belief in 'Intelligent Design' theory. That would be too much for you to comprehend. Lets leave it there.

@Landhiwala - "There are people in US who believe that Elvis Presley is still alive"
Well er... the population of these people believing Elvis Presley is alive, is miniscule, most of them are on drugs or in rehabs.. Whereas in Pakistan a sizeable population mainstream, holds similar outlandish believes and in fact drive the policy... Get the difference?
@Bewildered:its weird, how these countries their own rule, for russian crimea self rule vote is ok but chechnya is not allowed to do the same
@sharabi: See,...you finally got it,..they really don't care, west of you. All these sadhus, mochees, bhangees, untouchables, Dalits, Modis, yogis, swamis, ashrams, benarsi...and all words in sanskrit that end in.....is. There you have it. Smells like a big cauldron with a big mess cooking.

@Bewildered:
Only if India had let the Kashmiris use their democratic right to vote, then all these groups wouldn’t have come to existence in the first place.
In other words, since India does not allow Kashmiris to vote, Pakistan will become Emirate of Talibanistan.
Well, go right ahead. Be my guest.
Incidentally more than 60% of Kashmiris actually voted for the provincial Government elections.

Go figure.
@Gratgy: Those who do what you said they do have nothing to do with the term 'deen'! They are soldiers of fortune, the legionaires hired by the NGO's, and do not discriminate among the victims.

@Bewildered:
Yeah! Or else Pakistan will destroy itself. Go right ahead!!
@Sialkot wala will you please enlighten us with your creative thoughts because: Brahmins: The one who is intellectual & knowledge sadhus= Sanskrit word for Monk in English, Fakir in Your language yogi= The Firm Devotee of 1 and only 1 god, Like a person who pray for ALLAH (SWT)
Rest of the words, sentences will take time hence i think its enough.
@BruteForce:
"If you had listened to us in the 1990s, when Pakistan was giving birth to groups like LeT and JeM and Taliban...."
Thanks but no thanks for your unsought advice. Only if India had let the Kashmiris use their democratic right to vote, then all these groups wouldn't have come to existence in the first place.
What a magnificent article. The dwindling number of authors to show us the darkness and terrorist black-hole we are destined to be pushed to. Political expediency and corruption of elites and power craziness of concerned have pushed the country to the brink. Salvaging now seems a next-to-impossible feat. Let the taliban hordes descend for the north and establish islamic emirate that we painstakingly helped erect in Afghanistan. We have been religiously busy in spawning lashkars over the last three decade. They are grown up now and are capable settle to settle the account of creating them. Good luck to them as we all are praying for their success.
@Sialkot wala: The problems in Pakistan are way, way bigger, my friend. In fact, they don't even brook comparison.
@Raj - USA: Why are you worried about problems of this country? Worry about Hindustan. Caste system. Untouchables. Brahmins, Sadhus, Yogis. Modis. Amit Shah, Bodoland killing of Muslims. Gujrat massacres. Muslims confined to ghettos. Heal thyself first
@Kolsat: Time for you to wake up. And stop chastising Islam. There are people in US who believe that Elvis Presley is still alive. Does that answer your question?
@I am a Khan: SO right ..whereever there is an anti-Islam news , reporst or "analysis"..there is oil, minerals, and USA!
not too sure how and why Pakistani media is so anti-muslim, CAR and SYria has seen worst crimes against hundreds of thousands of msulims girls and children never heard ET reporting on that as they are reporting on 200 here. Propaganda against and genocide of sunni muslims continue
I have commented many times in ET on these issues, for which Pakistani muslims hate with all the spite. I am glad that this author and few others rational and religiously thinking rightly, are also supporting my views. Let me summarize what I have been saying:
(1) The way conversions were done to hindus and christian girls is the most insulting act to Islam done by the muslims of Pakistan. Can you even imagine the filth of mindset that muslims of Pakistan have been forcing on themselves when you bring young kidnaped girls right in your family home and rape them. (2) Shias have been keeping quiet and they are getting targeted today. (3) Muslim woman have not only been keeping quiet but also assisting their men in their devious acts and they themselves are getting targeted now. Vani, bombing of girl's schools, tribal jirgas ordering gang rape sentences to woman have all sprung from the same devious mindset of muslim men of Pakistan that muslim woman of Pakistan have been supporting.
I have commented earlier that soon we shall see talibans kidnaping sunni girls of Pakistan in hundreds at a time, taking them to their caves and do the same to them what the sunni musims of Pakistan have been doing to the hindu and christian girls. The talibans doing so will be claiming that they are making those sunni girls purer muslims.
I have been saying for long that the only solution is that there should be realization by the muslims of Pakistan. Just a few, like this author will not make any difference, but it is a very good sign. The real realization will come only when everyone knows what has happened in the past and still continues to happen to the hindu and christian girls. Where and how these girls end up. It is necessary for Pakistan to set up a Commission, similar to India's Saachar Commission and also publish the report of the Commission. Unless there is a realization of the past, how are you ever going to rectify the past. With persons like Chief Justice Iftekar who praises these acts and Chandio who just tries to cover up these acts nothing will happen. Marvi Memon has dropped out and Imran Khan and Shireen Mazzari never came up. However, everyone can be sure of one thing. It has alway been and still continues to be the practice of Pakistan to cover up. No Commission, from Hamoodur Rahman Commission to Memogate and OBL Commission has ever published a report. So, the evils will continue to grow. Sooner or later, or even before the end of this year, we may see muslim girls (not many hindu or christian girls are in schools) being kidnapped in hundreds or thousands from schools by the talibans for conversion to purer muslims.
Big Conspiracy to fool the world.
There is Oil in Borno and the US of A want it. what do they do? They create a group, tell the group to use the name of Islam so as to malign the divine religion, and then US of A send their army to capture the oil and also kill innocent muslims without touching Shekau and his group.
There is always a "rash" of articles after BBC/CNN sponsored "leads hit the media". Perhaps someone can explain what Bock means?
Of course its a pity that children have become pawns in this game of drones and religion. Especially Obama's girls.
@Alann:::Its very heartening to know that 38% of Pakistan is still under direct control of Pakistan.Pl disclose the source of this encouraging news and the location of that blessed piece of land so that Pakistanis can migrate there
It time we stop being hypocritical and start laying the blame where its due. Its our pak army that was our undoing! And its true. You may like to throw a fit or whatever, india-besides its stance on kashmir and water issues, was right that the foreign policy of using proxies and use of meta narrative of hatred will come to haunt us. And it has. And the devils dance is still going on. STILL. Thats the bigger worry. The new model is the use of flaming sectarian hatred in balochistan to split baloch insurgency. Why cant we have progressive solutions. Like building a few dams and rehabilitating the baloch by giving them irrigated land. You people know that total population of our baloch brothers in balochistan is only 7.5 millions and it translates into less than 1 million households. So we only got to appease 1 million people. Why cant we allocate them agricultural land in cholistan and give them bank credit to rehabiliate it. Why cant we give them jobs. Why cant we develop two modern cities in balochistan with hospitals and schools? My question is Why?
They kill students and teachers, bomb buses and barracks, break open prisons and use child soldiers as young as 12.
How is this different than what we see in Pakistan?? Your "Mujahideen" also kill students, teachers, bomb buses and barracks, break open prisons and use children as young as 12 as suicide bombers
The following ring especially true for Pakistan, especially Karachi:
"the state stops safeguarding the social contract, and loses its monopoly over violence"
"[A terrorist group]...generates funds by extorting businesses, robbing banks and kidnapping the rich."
Studies and research is necessary to establish why devotion to religion can make killers and monsters of ordinary human beings. Secondly, if these violent thugs who take shelter under the umbrella of religion do not enjoy support of the broader religious community, why are they never excommunicated ? If they are condemned with mere lip service the world will draw the inference that the violent deviants have wide across the board support through the community, This issue is of primary importance and needs immediate redressal else the space for Muslims and Islam will get constrained and their economic future imperiled. Only reformation and a broad minded interpretation of scriptures to keep up with the times, will save organized religion from the misconduct of followers.
Only those countries who do not have real strong or organized armies such brutal acts take place on a regular basis. Stable countries with the rule of law do not have these problems. It is about time we see the mirror and wake up ASAP or at least stop denying the facts and not kill the messengers. This kind of brutality has no parallel in modern history in the name of religion and forced conversion with pride and justification. Why is there not much outrage, anger and dharna against these terrorists who are giving a bad name to our religion? I bet most rightwing parties of Pakistan are not even going to strongly condemn these acts even verbally. Yet they are called themselves reformists and corruption free. This duplicity is the height of corruption.
Good article. But then you could not have avoided bringing Modi in! Right? With the imminent coming of Modi commentators in Pak have gone hysterical. India 1 : Pak 0 .
Few weeks back I read in these pages a commentator chastising media of publishing this news of kidnap to malign Islam and Muslims. I believe there are many who believe that these girls are not kidnapped as there are many who do not believe that Bin Laden is not killed but alive. Unless Islamic world fully modernises such kidnappings and killings will occur and that is a pity.
A few days back in these pages a Pakistani wrote that this news of kidnap of Nigerian girls is western propaganda to malign Islam. If you have such people among you and there are many I am sad to say what hope is there. There should be concerted effort to modernise and keep these people in a minority.
@Alann: Stay in India. Write about Modi. We dont need wake up calls from Hindus. We have enough problems.
Does the writer really think that the Pakistani state (more precisely its army) or even its public is going to abandon its proxy war strategies because of whats happening in faraway Africa ?
Only 38% of Pakistan's land is under direct control of Pakistan today. I won't say anything more than that. If anyone thinks situation in Pakistan isn't as worse as the world sees it, wait till Taliban takes over control of government.
Amazing Piece Asad! Without doubt one of your best works. Wonderful closing paragraphs! A wake up call and a good analysis in key with reality.
