Embarrassing travel restrictions

Letter May 11, 2014
What else can be expected if polio workers are constantly attacked by militants and are not paid adequate salaries?

PESHAWAR: The World Health Organisation has recommended travel restrictions on Pakistani nationals who are not immunised against polio. Can somebody from the prime minister house, the interior ministry or the health ministry explain why these travel restrictions were not expected?

Given our failure to provide immunisation against the polio virus, such restrictions came as no surprise to many of us. What else can be expected if the foot soldiers of the polio vaccination campaign, our brave lady health workers, are constantly attacked by militants and are not paid adequate salaries? Most of them have been on the roads, protesting because they have not been given their salaries for months.

Why does our government fail to take preemptive measures before drastic international sanctions are imposed? We have lost a lot of face because of the government’s incompetency.
