A sublime backheel from Torres - who had missed several chances during another out-of-sorts performance - created an 86th-minute winner for Maxi Rodriguez that sealed Liverpool’s first away win since April.
After languishing in the relegation zone following their worst start to a season in more than 50 years, Liverpool are now 12th with 12 points, still five points off the coveted top four.
Meanwhile, Newcastle claimed a 5-1 rout of Sunderland. Captain Kevin Nolan’s treble and two goals from striker Shola Ameobi sealed a one-sided victory for newly-promoted Newcastle as 10-man Sunderland could only muster up a single goal by Darren Bent.
Aston Villa fought out a 0-0 draw with Birmingham, leaving both the teams in the same positions in the Premier League standings.
United secure win
Manchester United maintained their stranglehold on Tottenham Hotspur with a controversial 2-0 Old Trafford victory to move back within five points of Premier League leaders Chelsea. The game was settled by a 31st-minute Nemanja Vidic header and a bizarre late goal by Nani. Spurs were furious about the second that came six minutes from time after Nani nicked the ball from goal-keeper Heurelho Gomes, who thought he was taking a free kick and stood back astonished as the goal was given.
