Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against Pakistan. I am a card-carrying member of the candle-light-at-Wagah-border club. I think India and Pakistan should make love not war. I am all for resolving the Kashmir dispute, demilitarising Siachen, ending terrorism, increasing trade ties and so on. Since I have zero interest in cricket, India-Pakistan matches also fail to arouse any anti-Pakistan sentiment in me. Pakistan is a place that has my roots and some very dear friends. Yet, there is this little thorn between us: your claim that your mangoes are better.
What annoys me further is that there are Pakistanis who claim to have tasted Indian mangoes and still think Pakistani mangoes are better. The problem with such Pakistani mango lovers is that they are Pakistanis first and mango lovers second. Which is not to say I have tasted Pakistani mangoes. Why would I do that when I get to eat the world’s best mangoes? India has over 1,200 varieties of mangoes, Pakistan only 400.
Pakistani ‘mango nationalism’ is not limited to Pakistanis. The Pakistani government uses it too. Almost every year, the Pakistani government sends a box of mangoes to the Indian prime minister and sometimes the president and top ministers too. This is most insidious. This is a way of saying, “Look, how thoughtful we are”, but it is actually sub-conventional warfare against our egos. It is practically a way of saying that Pakistani mangoes are better. Killing the enemy with sweetness! The Indian government’s silence on this is most unacceptable.
The most famous Pakistani mango is known as Anwar Ratol. Half of Pakistani mango nationalism is based on the claim that Indians haven’t tried the Anwar Ratol. What most Pakistanis don’t know is that the Anwar Ratol’s roots are in a village two hours from Delhi. The village is called Ratol and its first Ratol tree is just over a hundred years old. One of the mango growers had migrated from Ratol to Punjab many years before Partition and there he named it after his father, Anwar.
So you know the mango on the basis of which you claim your mango superiority? Even that is from India. Doesn’t that settle the India-Pakistan mango debate?
The Ratol mangoes are well known in western Uttar Pradesh but haven’t taken off commercially in a big way like other mangoes. There are various reasons why some mangoes become more popular than others.
Having established in my head that Indian mangoes were thus better than Pakistani ones, I wondered why this was so important to me? How could I call myself post-nationalist and believe in mango nationalism?
Discussing the issue of mangoes with several people gave me the answer. I realised that even within India people fight over which mango is the best. There’s a great Delhi-Mumbai divide over the Alphonso. The expensive Alphonsos, we North Indians feel, is overrated. It is too sweet, too perfect.
My favourite mango is Dussehri. I grew up in Lucknow and because the Dussehri orchards of Malihabad are next door, the markets are flooded with Dussehri. When I went to Ratol and tasted the Ratol mango, I felt it was like a better version of Dussehri. But I censored the thought lest I betray my loyalty to the Malihabadi Dussehri. Therein lies the answer. Mangoes are such an important part of our childhood memory that the mangoes we grew up with define who we are. We are the mangoes we eat. Anyone saying another mango is better, is assaulting our very being. That is why, I realised, I took such strong objection to the Pakistani claim of their mangoes being better, or for that matter the Mumbai arrogance about Alphonsos.
Yet there’s one point which we can all agree about, that those South Asians who claim not to be fond of mangoes are to be pitied.

@Raj - USA: True ........ Banarsi Langda is definitely one of the best! In the same league is Himsagar of Bengal and Rumaniya of Tamil Nadu. Alphonso is good too, but overrated and no match to the named three.
@Nandita.: It is quite clear that you have not had a taste of the other varieties. I too grew up with the heresay that Alphonso mangoes were the best as far as mangoes from India are concerned! Believe me, Alphonsos were the easiest to export which led the world to believe that they were the best. Am just giving a few names for you to work on and then comment ... Langda of UP, Himsagar of Bengal and Rumaniya of TN. You would BURY Alphonso!
Indian mangos are bland. They dont have the mango taste. The best ones are found in Florida, not India or Pakistan. Its called the VALENCIA PRIDE mango. YUM
Dude i have to disagree over Anwar Ratol as most favourite in Pakistan. Chaunsa or summer are the best and most loved one. Aroma and taste makes Chaunsa the best variety of mangoes.
are we going to eat mangoes or count trees.I have enjoyed mangoees from both nations and look forward to enjoying the varieties i have not had the good fortune to taste yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mango is indeed a unique fruit
@Aseem: I agree with you. I think I too am not a Mango Monogamist. Whatever be the variety. I love the magoes. I think its the only fruit that is feasted and celebrated.
Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes are the best in the world! They say it is a combination of water, weather and soil...which is perfect in the 100km stretch between Rantagiri and Devgad.. BANGLOREANS! can also enjoy Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes by ordering online at www.onlyalphonso.com . Mumbaikars have been enjoying Ratnagiri Alphonsos for years.
In my opinion, this story is more about our (Indian and Pakistani) mindset and less about which is the tastiest mango. We just stick to our point of view and don't show any interest in other points of view.
@Saqi: We also have Chaunsa in India dude.
@sabi: We also have Chaunsa dude.
Pakistan famous mango is sindhri not an anwar ratol their mango in world like sindhri
Stop fighting guy, or else Philippine mango will win :)
Chunsa...No 1. Tried them all. Nothing to do with where they are grown. Alphonso over rated though good branding by India.
Indians call some strange variety of mango "Chausa" which is by no means Chausa of Multan.
I don't know about others but for me Safeda is the best.
As they say, mother's cooking is the best. Its the mangos that we have grown up eating and with which we associate our sweetest childhood memories, are no doubt the bestest. Being born and brought up in UP let me say if you have preference for only one variety, you are not a mango lover.... or may be you are being too much of a monogamist.
As a Mumbaikar now i know the value and sentiments behind Hapus or better known by its portuguese name Alphonso. I agree, its a typical perfect mango, roundish, fleshy, golden, aromatic and sweet. And top of it, it hits the market very early and catches the year long starving mango lover by a delicious surprize.... But... the mango polygamists wait for the later variety from north that is Dussehri, Langda, chausa, malda and desi. To enjoy them you need to sit with your friends and have all the varieties and savour them one by one to know the distint character of each of these mangoes.... hmm a real mango orgy. Lucknowi Thumri of Dussehri, Banarsi Thumka of Langda, chowk bazar ka chausa and dhele ka giraya desi..... i am already down the memory lane, drowned in nostalgia. I love my mango, sorry my mangoes.
Nice points Shivam, very good piece. Nice topic, but instead of getting your main point, most people have taken you verrrrry seriously ;)
I have nothing against India. I think it is a great country and we should be friends. However, nothing in the world tastes better than Chaunsas. It is the variety of the heavens.
After tasting all kinds of mangoes available in the Indian Sub Continent I can say with certainty the flavor ,texture and appearance of Punjabi mangoes is the best .Succulent and sweet ..pure joy to consume .:)
Chinese mangoes are the best. They are sweeter than the sweetest honey
how about send some to us in Pakistan... i would love to sink my teeth in them :)
Oh Gosh how come no one mentioned Pakistani Langra. I mean thats the best mangoe in the world. You feel like taste of heaven in your mouth when you try Langra. Pakistani Langra by a long mile the best mangoe in the whole subcontient. I cant wait for mangoes to come in the market. You lot have made me hungry i m missing my mangoes. Bring them on :))))
The so-called great mangoes that are praised here are sooo sweet that they have no other taste of flavor. It is not surprising that both India and Pakistan have so many diabetic patients. I have given up on these extra sweet mangoes and when I taste them I feel like throwing up. The truth is most people in the world do not rate fruits only on the basis of their sugar content.
The best mangoes in india come from south gujrat. I should know, my grandfather had 50 bigha of all types of mango plantation, close to 3000 trees. Having tested many variety since when i was a baby, i also agree, alphanso is overrated (besides nowadays the alphanso only seem to blossom every 3 years). The mangoes with very unique taste & flavor is ''Langdo' , it is a chusni type mango because of its soft pulp . I am also a mumbaikar and would like them to know that we used have the first harvest send to us by our grand father (people in a big society i lived were jealous because they had to eat the ratnagiri mangoes bought from crowford market) Once again the author is showing is tunnel vision as he knows nothing of mangoes from ratnagiri or south gujrat, as all UPwallahs and punjabi swarm to these region to lease the mango farm or buy the mangoes every year..
i like water melons...
Mango fashions Man ....goes to heaven.....but when it comes to fruits and Mangoes , the Indian Pakistani varieties beat the Sri lankan, kenyan , thailand and Australian hands down. ........Living in Persian/Arabian gulf ....every year we taste both ....Alphonso, ratnagiri kesari dusehra from India and Chausa , Sindhri from Pakistan ......Pakistani mangoes are sweeter and have a strong mango smell while Indians are not .....that's the main catch. So it depends on the mood of the day which would u like ,,,,,,,,,However when it comes fruits ...Mango is King
All i can say is indian subcontinent is so rich in mangoes that we fight over which is the best. comon just enjoy the taste, whichever we love is the best.
How so ???...........do your mangoes explode ?
Nothing like Samar behisht of Shujabad and Dusseri of Rahimyarkhan , liaqatpur , Anwar Rataul hardly makes into the grate company .
Word "mango" was used 36 times in your article. And yes we all love our mangoes based on where we come from. Gotta take that competition with a grain of salt. Good thing is we have 1600 kinds of mangoes among India and Pakistan. More than enough for us to share. God Bless!!
Pakistani mangoes are better for Pakistanis and Indian mangoes are better for Indians. Simple and if you are visiting each other's side then do (say) as the Romans do. Matter resolved. My mother loved Saharni.
Nice article.
Alphonso and sweet? I wonder you had eaten it with sugar. Alphonso has a very bland taste. I think Mumbaikar like it because they don't get any good mango there. This time I brought some alphonso along with me to my home town and after eating them the only question I got from my relatives is "why is it so famous?"
Dusshehri and Langda are best. If you get to try langda from Banaras, there is nothing like it. Chaunsa is good too but it is too sweet. I have no idea about Pakistani mangoes though.
As a Pakistani living in Germany, I have tasted both Pakistani and Indian mangoes and in my opinion Pakistani mangoes are far better.
It's not just me who says that. Even the Turkish, arabic shop keepers selling fruits here from India and Pakistan tell me that Pakistani mangoes taste way better than Indian mangoes.
Why isn't Pakistan starting a Mango diplomacy with India. , now with the cricket diplomacy ran out of steam. Here I am quoting great Nelson Mandela...the great crusader of peace and love.
“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
― Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
@Sachin Joshi
you are on spot. Btw I dont understand what is the author meant by Indian mangoes.
Shivam, what an interesting debate you have initiated...
I think the writer has never tasted Chaunsa of Shujabad Multan and Large Size version of Anwar Ratul from Multan
Being in Canada we have both Indian and Pakistani mangoes to eat. I guess, India and Pakistan should trade mangoes too. This way people of both countries can taste this heavenly fruit. Everyone has his own type of taste buds. So, I would like to add here. Taste of Mangoes comes from Heaven and they belong to both countries.
I have had Dussehri, I have had alphonso.. But the best mango is Himsagar (Himshagor in Bengali) found in West Bengal. Period.
@Mirza: I so disagree man! Mangoes are God's gift to the subcontinent. Such gifts are so magnificent that they should celebrated. Just came across this on mangoes and the subcontinent. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2014/05/05/the-real-crisis-facing-europe-a- shortage-of-indian-mangoes/
Hearty congratulations to Indian on this magnificent achievement.
This totally explains why you are a Modi basher. You are an "Aam" Aadmi Supporter.
I have always eaten Pakistani mangoes and love them - if the Indians want me to check their mangoes out I would be happy to. Please send 10 crates of your best and I will ask my friends to check them for you also :)
Reading the article and comments here makes one feel we've been transported to the future where the two nations are finally arguing over things worth arguing for. I actually enjoyed the article very much (and now crave mangoes).
@skc Agree with you. Today he forget his modi pill.:
Give me all varieties . I will decide then ;)
Which mango is the best?. Okay, let me tell the truth. Taste is not guarantee that a variety of mango will become the most popular among consumers. it's because consumers always seek balance between quality and price. In fact, mostly of consumers prefer to buy the second or third delicious mangoes with affordable price than buy the most delicious which usually the most expensive.
The writer has decided to reach this conclusion of his without even trying a Pakistani mango, ever. I stopped reading after that part.
ET, get your act together please. I'm sure there are much more saner voices across the border which can be used in your paper.
Sindhree in early summer and chaunsa in late summer are most popular
Sweetness and texture are the way most in the subcontinent judge mangoes. In Thailand, Cambodia mangoes are eaten before they are fully ripe (sweetened). I am surprised how the different cultures judge mangoes. I was surprised.
I have sampled various mangoes. There is one that rises above the others without competition. The Sindhri! it has the right texture, the perfect taste, and is best eaten when cut into cool cubes. Word of caution though, not all Sindhris are created equal. Once you have tried the perfect specimen...you understand why the mango is called the king of fruits!
Guys! Can we just see this piece for what it is? It isn't about establishing supremacy of Indian mangoes over Pakistan's. It is about where our rigid passions should be directed at: not at contentious flash-points that hatemongers feed on, but on simple, sweet little things. Like mangoes. I really won't mind savoring an Indian Alphonso one day, and give in to its taste. I would be equally cool about tasting it and then wonder what has all the hype been about. What I do want, however, is to be able to eat it. Without having to move to UK or UAE.
Bro... Sending mangoes in the season is a custom in Pakistan. We all send it to one an other. Even the courier companies have mango promotions in the season. and the mangoes are sent to many heads of states not just India! Gimme ur address ill send some to you too! :)
and there are a lot of better things to discuss besides mangoes.
No mango better then Chaunsa of Multan Excellent taste. do try that.
Mango is a word derived from Tamil. Manga is the Tamil word. It was adopted into English and it became Mango. Incidentally mango the king of fruit originated in India. There are more than 500 species of Mangos indigenous to India.
Its a scientifically proven fact that your sense of taste develops in your childhood and so does your particualr assocoation with it. Its like your wife cooks better food, but you will never ever forget the taste of things your mother cooked for you. Similar mentalilty is observed in other things and hence you are always a desi no matter how much time you spend in the west :)
Indian mangoes are the best. THIS IS FALSE STATEMENT
Those people who have never eaten/tasted chonsa, anwar atool, and langra aam from Multan, actually he has never got the taste of a real mango. Keep on saying best what ever you get to eat in the name of mango. You will come to life when you will taste any of them above from Multan. Missing all of them now in USA :( Here all mangoes are too tasteless. Esay amon ko to salan mein imly k tor pe use kertay thay.
{{{HAS I can’t decide if i should laugh or cry after reading this}}}
@HAS Don't blame the Tribune. That was the best article to fill the quota.
It is really mock-epic piece of writing. Mangoes are mangoes and they do'nt have nationalities. The problem is each variety grows in a particular climate and physical environment. I can not say I have tried all mangoes that grow in Indian part. Dussahry has wonderful aroma, but taste!! There is no taste like Chaunsa. Who told you Anwar Retol is the best mango? It is Chaunsa and it grows in Sraiki areas of Pakistan. You can not re-locate Sraiki area to get the best mango around the world growing somewhere in India.
Craze and popularity of indian mangoes have been existed since centuries and centuries/civilisation. The entomology of word mango spread across the world in english is itself derived from india and its language Tamil and Malayalam "manga" and "mangai". Not only 1400 varieties of shapes, sizes and flavour of exotic mangoes, india also has huge variety and flavours of bananas and many other fruit too.
Indian alphonso is the best in the world. No competition. Sadly, it is too expensive for a common man like me.
@skc: You are wrong... read the last paragraph again... the implication is obvious... that Mr. Modi falls in that category ("not fond of mangoes", else surely he would have mentioned him!) -- but yes, Modi is certainly "fond of" (in one extreme or the other :-) of those who are fond of mangoes... I guess it would depend on if they in turn are fond of the "1 in 1200" or the "1 in 400" :-)
Chaunsa Samar Bahisht is by far the best
Dussehri my foot. And Alphonsos are seriously over rated. The best mangos are of course Himayat - both sweet and tart in the right measure. And those who don't agree, go take a mango!
Both Countries produces the best Mangoes in the world. Taste is relative and subjective. Indian mangoes as well as Pakistani Mangoes need to be marketed to the rest of the world.
@sabi: We have plenty of chausa variety mango in Bihar alone ..Trust me nobody likes it that much ..As someone has already mentioned, vanarsi langada or Malda is liked here very much.Taste once and feel the difference b/w two by yourself..
Genetically Modified crops are destroying Indian agriculture. Point to ponder. Companies like Monsanto should be banned in Pakistan.

Any one who likes AAM AADMI?
Chill guys ,Lets take our baskets to wagha border & pelt our mangoes to each other, of-course it is better option then shelling Mortars.
@sabi sure bro ;)
Dude, your article wont improve indian mangoes... you better get research done and improve your "mangoes"... or better have some chaunsa and sindhri this season.
I love Chaunsa. Chaunsa is the best.
Every person has different taste buds, one fruit favourite to some is disliked by others. All of us believe our mothers cooked food to be best but others may not like it. Please dont make judgement on your personal likings
@sabi: Happy to see that the topic of mangoes has touched a chord with you :)
if assuming Indian mangoes are best makes you happy, then keep on believing it there is no harm in assuming
I think you have started a mango war among the mango people of two countries.
@Dhanish: Why don't you send us some tastiest Indian mangoes! want to share the taste.
@sabi we already have chaunsa don't find it that great as compared to others we eat in india. Pakistan has 400 variety india its triple 1200 that alone leads no scope who has more variety and varied taste and flavour.
What a sweeeeeet article!! But it only goes to show just why the "issues" between India and Pakistan are destined (and sadly) never to be "solved" -- I mean guys let us face it, if the citizens of the two countries cannot agree on issues of "sweetness" then what are the chances of anything happening on issues of "bitterness" ...? :-) Sad... but true.
If trade barriers are lifted with India I'm afraid we will be deprived of king of mango chaunsa..hehe
Interesting that everyone is talking about mangoes and not a single comment on what the writer actually meant :P
If you want to drink tastiest mango juice drink Anwer Ratole direct-and if you want to eat best mango pudding eat it direct from chaunsa.Don't know about Indian mangos much.
I had the occasion to taste Pakistani Chausa in middle east. They are too sweet almost sugary, but lack the flavour of a mango. Indian alphonso and kesar have the best flavour, though alphonso gets rotten very quickly.
Pretty funny and a proof that we desi people are all the same when it comes to our stubbornness and preconceived ideas. There is no such thing as the best in the food. No lintel can be the best, or no meat can be the best. There are times and places for each and everything. Many second generation Pakistani kids in the west when asked by their parents to eat mango they say "why"! That is why mango is a fruit for the immigrants in the west. My own kids do not eat the best Kinnos of Pakistan. They have too many seeds compared to clementines. In addition to Pakistan and India, Philippines and other countries have great tasting and fragrant mango.
Banarasi Langra mangoes are the best that I have tasted. Much touted Alphanso is no match for it. I haven't tasted Dussehri or any of the Pakistani varieties, so cannot say anything on it.
Dude, Pakistani mangoes are the best like it or not :P yum yummm
Nothing about Modi . What?
Maharashtra's (Devgad & Ratnagiri) alphonso's are the best mangoes in the world, no doubt about it.
The Indian Mangoes we get in the UK pale in comparison to the Pakistani Mangoes. They are small with a nice fragrance but lack the richness and texture of the Pakistani mangoes.
I do not know what the authors catch is in writing this article about mangoes, since we do not like either Indians or Pakistani mangoes because they are too sweet for our taste. Also the author should know that Indian mangoes import in Europe has been banned.
Rex Minor
Hahaha very nice. If that's the case, then I dare say that Pakistani films are better than Indian films :p
'Yet there’s one point which we can all agree about, that those South Asians who claim not to be fond of mangoes are to be pitied.'
I don't like mangoes, cricket AND biryani. Banish me from the monsoon lands ,eh?
Nothing beats a ripe sindhri mango...
OMG it is the BEST
Dude, have a mango and chill.
Shivam, Enjoyed reading your article.. Btw my personal favorite is 'Sindhri'.. It comes in early june and is gone by late july. Please give it a try sometime and you might change your mind. I personally think its the best mango in Pakistan (not anwar ratol). Dussehri is also cultivated in Pakistan, and other top varieties are Chaunsa and desi.
I happen to belong from Ratual (district Baghpath, U.P), and the first tree bearing Anwar Rataul still stands in lands belonging to my family members. Most of our relatives decided to stay back after partition, while my immediate family migrated to Sindh, Pakistan. Having tasted mangoes from both sides of the border in abundance, I disagree with Shivam. Pakistani mangoes from Mirpurkhas area in Sindh taste much better than the ones from my ancestral village. The soil from the mango producing zone in the Baghpath district as well as Malihabad has borne mangoes for over a century and has lost much of its virility. Mirpurkhas started producing mangoes in the 1990's, used better seeds and modern techniques, and get a better produce and taste. The farmers are much more creative and innovative. They remind me of the stories we hear about our ancestors who pioneered mango plantation in western UP. Their progeny lacks that drive and passion.
I can't decide if i should laugh or cry after reading this
Indian Dussehri is the best. Full stop. No other mango comes close.
The Alphonso is too sweet and too perfect! And you have a problem because Alphonso mangoes are perfect? Clearly, you have no taste or perhaps this is a case of sour grapes or ( should I say, mangoes?) . Haha. Alphonso mangoes are the best and Indians who don't agree are to be pitied! I am a Mumbaikar and yes, I am making my arrogance about the Alphonso very apparent :)
