A 14-member party were trying to cross an open drain that carries toxic effluents from Chashma Sugar Mill II. They were on foot and had opted to risk the journey across the drain since no bridge was present.
Toxic fumes rising from the effluent caused them to faint before eight members died.
The five family members were identified as Qasim, his wife, daughter and two nieces.
A nearby mosque appealed through its loudspeakers to assist in recovering bodies from the drain.
Locals worked to recover the bodies with rescue services delayed.
